ReFantazio trailers, gameplay, platforms & more

The long-awaited Project Re Fantasy finally appears to be alive in the form of Metaphor: ReFantazio, which is incredibly exciting for any Atlus and Persona fans. Announced back in 2016, Atlus has remained silent on the new game by Persona 5 director Katsura Hashino – until now.

The game looks to be an exciting blend of Persona and Shin Megami Tensei, continuing Atlus’ trend of releasing highly stylised games with excellent turn-based combat, so here’s a rundown of the trailer and what we know so far for Metaphor: ReFantazio.

Do we know any Metaphor: ReFantazio gameplay details?

While we have only seen a few trailers for Metaphor: ReFantazio so far, we can get a grasp of what the gameplay will be like from it.

As was expected, the game features turn-based combat, playing to the specialities of director Katsura Hashino, who has worked across the Persona and Shin Megami Tensei series.

In another trailer shared during 2023’s Game Awards, we also see the main character engaging in some real-time action combat, so it could offer somewhat of a hybrid between the two.

During the trailer, as shown above, we got a glimpse at a screen titled ‘Synthesis Seeker’, which appears to be a list of skills that you can use in combat. There are seven skills shown on this screen, and those with a keen eye might recognise Matarukaja and Tetrabreak as support skills that have been featured in previous MegaTen games.

Furthermore, footage from combat shows a four-party-member system, but more importantly, each member seems to have two images – one of their ‘human’ form and another more otherworldly. This could indicate that there is some form of ‘Persona’ system within the game, but this is yet to be confirmed.

Beyond this, you seem to also be able to use a hoverboard to get through the various levels, which might indicate that there is a level of freedom and exploration within the zones too.

Are there any Metaphor: ReFantazio trailers?

The first trailer for Metaphor: ReFantazio was shown at the Xbox Summer Game Fest showcase in June 2023. It’s a rather chaotic trailer, to say the least, but it shows off the game’s incredible style across both the visuals and the UI.

From what we have seen, it appears as if the game draws more from the aesthetics and mood of Shin Megami Tensei than Persona, ditching the school setting for a fantasy approach. This trailer is filled to the brim with otherworldly monsters and locales, so if you’re a fan of Atlus RPGs, then you will certainly have a lot to look forward to.

We received another look at the game during The Game Awards 2023 as well, showing off more of the exciting visuals, combat, and world. New enemies are visible here, and we are given a greater glimpse at some of the social interactions you’ll be able to undertake on your adventure.

Do we know the Metaphor: ReFantazio platforms?
