He held positions as a derivatives trader at Credit Suisse, a speechwriter for William Bennett, a former U.S. secretary of education, and a securities attorney at Sullivan & Cromwell.

Together with Ken Howery and Luke Nosek, partners at PayPal, he founded Founders Fund in 2005. Earlier, Thiel bought a 10.2% share in Facebook for $500,000 in August 2004, making him the company’s first outside investor.

He remained on the board of directors despite selling the majority of his Facebook shares for more than $1 billion in 2012. Thiel was controversially granted New Zealand citizenship in 2011 after spending 12 days there non-consecutively thanks to the Fifth National Government’s intervention on his behalf.

He served as the investment committee chair when he co-founded Mithril Capital in 2012, co-founded Valar Ventures in 2010, and worked part-time as a partner at Y Combinator from 2015 to 2017.

Thiel oversees Breakout Labs and the Thiel Fellowship through the Thiel Foundation, which also finances non-profit research into artificial intelligence, life extension, and seasteading.

Because Gawker had previously revealed Thiel’s sexual orientation, Thiel acknowledged in 2016 that he had paid Hulk Hogan’s legal fees in the Bollea v. Gawker litigation.

The lawsuit ultimately caused Gawker to go bankrupt, and its founder Nick Denton filed for bankruptcy as a result. Thiel is a libertarian conservative who has contributed significantly to right-wing individuals and organizations in the United States.

Thiel started playing chess when he was six years old and was once among the best young players in the United States. Despite being a Life Master, he hasn’t participated in a competition since 2003.

Thiel made the official opening move on November 30, 2016, in the opening tiebreak game of the 2016 World Chess Championship between Sergey Karjakin and Magnus Carlsen.

Thiel is a sporadic CNBC analyst who has been on both Squawk Box with Becky Quick and Closing Bell with Kelly Evans. He has been the subject of two Charlie Rose on PBS interviews.

Additionally, he has written for publications like The Wall Street Journal, First Things, Forbes, and Policy Review, which was once published by the Hoover Institution, a body he serves on.

Wallace Langham played Thiel in The Social Network. The movie, in his words, was “wrong on many levels.” On HBO’s Silicon Valley, Thiel served as the model for the Peter Gregory character.

Thiel was the inspiration for the Tobias Erkner character in Jonas Lüscher’s book Kraft (“Force”), the author claimed in an interview with Basellandschaftliche Zeitung.
