Steve Harper siblings-Former British footballer, Stephen Alan Harper was born on March 14, 1975, in Seaham, County Durham in the United Kingdom.
He grew up in the County Durham mining community of Easington and attended East Durham College to study sports. From an early age, he was interested in football, and goalie Bruce Grobbelaar was his hero.
He attended his first football game at Anfield in the 1982–83 season, where Liverpool defeated the opposition 2-0. Easington Comprehensive School was attended by Harper.

Harper was acquired by Newcastle United for a pittance in 1993 from his hometown team Seaham Red Star. He was used as a backup to first-choice goalkeeper Pavel Srnek after moving to Newcastle, then Shaka Hislop, and finally Shay Given.
Before making his first-team debut as a halftime substitute against Wimbledon in 1998, he had loan stints at Bradford City, Gateshead, Stockport County, Hartlepool United, and Huddersfield Town.
At this time, Harper accomplished the extraordinary achievement of playing in each of the top five English league divisions.
Harper repeatedly came close to ousting Given, most notably in the 1998–99 season. Harper took part in Newcastle’s 2-0 loss to Manchester United in the 1999 FA Cup Final. Ruud Gullit, the manager at the time, seemed to think Harper merited playing over Given.
He participated in the UEFA Champions League numerous times in 2002, most notably against Juventus. At St James’ Park, in a 1-0 victory over the Italian champions, Harper was able to maintain a clean sheet.
In June 2006, he made clear his desire to play for the first team once more, prompting then-manager Glenn Roeder to make an effort to convince Harper to stay with the squad. He signed a new deal to keep him at St. James’ Park until June 2009, thus it seems to have worked.
In a friendly game on July 26, 2007, Harper entered as a replacement and played as a striker, a position that has frequently come up for him during his career.
At the start of the 2007–2008 campaign, Harper remained Newcastle’s goalkeeper under then–new manager Sam Allardyce. In January 2009, Harper agreed to a new deal that would keep him at Newcastle through 2012, his eighteenth season with the team.
After Newcastle defeated Doncaster Rovers 1-0 at the Keepmoat Stadium on March 23, 2010, Harper secured his twentieth clean sheet of the year, shattering the club record that had stood since Newcastle was last promoted in the 1992–1993 se ason.
On October 24, 2011, Harper signed a one-month loan agreement with Football League Championship team Brighton & Hove Albion. He made his debut against West Ham United on the same day.
Harper captained the squad in their 1-0 loss to Arsenal on May 19, 2013, in his farewell game. After his contract at Newcastle expired, Harper left the game of football.
On July 11, 2013, it was made public that Hull City, a recently promoted Premier League team, would give Harper a one-year deal as a backup for Allan McGregor.
Hull City announced on July 15, 2013, that they had signed Harper to a one-year free-agent contract. Harper renewed his one-year contract with Hull on May 23.
Against an A.C. Milan XI that included former Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio, Newcastle honored Harper for his 20 years of service on September 11, 2013.
To cover for goalkeepers Jordan Pickford and Vito Mannone, Harper joined his childhood club, Premier League team Sunderland, on January 22, 2016, for the remainder of the 2015–16 campaign. On June 10, it was revealed that Sunderland will not extend a new contract to Harper.
Harper joined Newcastle United on August 18, 2016, and on May 14, 2019, he resigned from his position as academy goalkeeping coach to join the senior Northern Ireland national squad.
On November 22, 2019, Harper returned to Newcastle as first-team coach, however, he remained to work with the Northern Ireland national side.
