Gainsborough Trinity, a non-League team, served as Warnock’s first managerial job from 1980 to 1981. He would go on to manage Burton Albion from 1981 to 1986 and Scarborough from 1986 to 1989, the latter of which saw him achieve promotion to the Football League in 1987.

He later served as manager of Notts County (1989–1993), taking the team in successive seasons from the Third Division to the First Division. However, he was fired after the club was demoted the season before the First Division was renamed the Championship.

He moved to Huddersfield Town (1993–1955) after a brief stint with Torquay United (1993), where he achieved promotion to the new First Division. In 1995–1997, he led Plymouth Argyle to the Second Division after quitting his position and joining them.

After being expelled, he had stints with Bury (1998-1999) and Oldham Athletic (1997–1998). Warnock joined his childhood team Sheffield United in 1999. He helped them to the League Cup and FA Cup semifinals in 2003 and the Premier League in 2006.

He did, however, resign in 2007 after the team was demoted. After that, he became the manager of Crystal Palace (2007–2010), preventing the team’s relegation to League One. He left the team when it entered administration to sign for Queens Park Rangers (2010–2012), where he won promotion to the Premier League in 2011.

After being fired while the club was in jeopardy, he joined Leeds United (2012–2013). He spent over fifteen months without a club after being fired by Leeds due to poor form until joining Crystal Palace, who were then in the Premier League, again in August 2014.

He was fired by Crystal Palace in December 2014 as a result of the team’s dismal season start, which put them in the relegation zone. In February 2016, Warnock took over as manager of Rotherham United once again after serving as Queens Park Rangers’ interim manager for a month.

In the 2017–18 season, he guided Cardiff City to Premier League promotion after being named manager of the team in October 2016.

In June 2020, Warnock was appointed manager of Middlesbrough, a position he maintained until his resignation in November 2021. After 42 years as a manager, Warnock declared his retirement from football management in April 2022.

Later, in February 2023, he made a brief return to Huddersfield Town after going into retirement, successfully leading the team to Championship safety. He agreed to a one-year contract to stay with the team after Kevin Nagle purchased it after the season.
