In October 2023, Mike Johnson hit major headlines after the Republicans selected him as their latest nominee for the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

With this pick, Johnson is the fourth nominee put forward after three others failed to win enough support from colleagues, and the second nominee of the day (Tuesday, 24 October).

Johnson’s nomination came a few hours after the prior nominee, Tom Emmer dropped out after failing to attract enough support. He was selected after three rounds of voting on Tuesday 24 October.

Johnson received 128 votes on the third ballot. The House has been without a Speaker and has been unable to pass bills since Kevin McCarthy was ousted on 3 October.

As of this writing, Johnson is the nominee of the House Republican Conference for Speaker of the House in the October 2023 speakership election.
