Herbstreit was a former quarterback for Ohio State University, and as such, it was against NCAA regulations for recruiters to interact with former student-athletes’ related media. Ohio State decided to stop recruiting Parsons as a result.

After just four games of his freshman season, Penn State University offered Parsons a football scholarship. He initially committed in the spring of 2016, decommitted for a spell, and then committed once more on December 20, 2017.

To hasten the enrolling process, he graduated from Harrisburg High School seven months early. James Franklin, the head coach at Penn State, informed Parsons that he would begin his career there as a middle linebacker rather than the defensive end he had played in high school.

Franklin also mentioned that Parsons, a true freshman, would be competing for the starting position.

Parsons only played in one of the Nittany Lions’ 13 games as a freshman, but he still managed to make 82 tackles, which put him in first place on the team. He also contributed 4 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, 10 quarterback hurries, and 2 forced fumbles.

As a freshman, he became the first Nittany Lion to ever lead the team in tackles. After sophomore linebacker Cam Brown was suspended for a rules infraction, Parsons took over at outside linebacker versus Rutgers University, recording 7 tackles and a strip sack.

In the 2019 Citrus Bowl game against the University of Kentucky, he recorded 14 tackles (one for a loss) and a strip-sack. In the Big Ten Freshman of the Year voting, he came in second place to wide receiver Rondale Moore.

Dallas Cowboys selected Parsons in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, 12th overall. On June 9, 2021, he agreed to a $17 million, four-year rookie contract.

Before week 2, DeMarcus Lawrence broke his foot during practice, so Dallas moved Parsons back to the defensive end position he played in high school, where he immediately found success, especially as a pass rusher.

In a 20-16 victory over the Vikings in Week 8, Parsons recorded 11 tackles, including four for loss, earning NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors. Parsons had at least one sack in six consecutive games from Week 9 through Week 14 on his resume.

His 12 sacks in his first 13 career games are the fourth-most by a rookie in NFL history behind only Julius Peppers (13), Reggie White (13,) and Leslie O’Neal (12.5).

In a 22-10 victory over the Rams in Week 5, Parsons recorded two sacks, five tackles, and a tackle for loss, earning NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
