Msimang served as Chief of Communications for MK in 1967 after being stationed at the ANC military installation in Kongwa, Tanzania, in the 1960s.

From the 1960s until the early 1990s, when majority rule took hold in South Africa, MK, an outlawed organization tried to overthrow the country’s apartheid regime.

He relocated to Zambia, where there was a sizable exiled South African African National Congress (ANC) presence. It was in this place that he met Ntombi, his accountant wife. The couple had three daughters together, one of whom was the writer and political analyst Sisonke Msimang.

He graduated from the University of Zambia with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Entomology and from the United States International University in San Diego, California, with a Master of Science in Business Administration.

Msimang handled UNICEF’s programs in Ethiopia, served as country director of Care International for Kenya, began volunteering for the UN in 1977, and worked there for health and refugee programs in Zambia. From 1977 to 1984, he was employed by the UN World Food Program in Kenya and Zambia.

He was employed by the World University Service of Canada (WUSC) from 1984 to 1987, spending time in both Ethiopia and Ottawa, Canada.

Following the end of apartheid in 1993–1994, Msimang and his family returned to South Africa, first relocating to Durban where he worked as a business consultant until being named executive director of South African Tourism.

In 1997, after a significant re-conceptualization that started in 1994, he was appointed CEO of South African National Parks.

Before being named Director-General of the Department of Home Affairs in 2007, he served as CEO of the State Information Technology Agency from October 2003 to 2007. 2010 saw him step down from this position.

Msimang is an Emeritus Board Member as of 2021 and was one of the founders of the African Parks Network. He joined the World Wildlife Fund South Africa Board in February 2011 and, as of 2021, has served as its chair of the Social Ethics and Transformation Committee. He also chairs the Board’s committees on nominations, human resources, and remuneration.

As a member of the ANC National Executive Committee, he has been critical of the factional politics inside the party following the ANC’s loss of support in the 2021 municipal elections.

At the 55th National Conference of the party in 2022, he declined to run for reelection to the NEC. Msimang was elected deputy president of the African National Congress Veterans’ League without a challenger during the league’s third national convention, which took place in July 2023.

Msimang left the ANC in December 2023, claiming widespread corruption and its negative effects on the nation, particularly the impoverished.
