Make Free International Calls With Facebook Messenger

Make a call 1

Viber is the standard when it comes to free VoIP calls. But if you’ve ever used it, you know the experience is far from satisfactory. Skype has a similar story; Apple FaceTime Audio works well, but not everyone has an iPhone. Obviously, there’s a place at the top of the VoIP game, and Facebook, like everything else in recent history, wants to claim it.

Today, almost everyone you know uses Facebook. They may not have Facebook messenger installed, but they certainly have the Facebook app installed or installed. Voice calling has been available in the Facebook Messenger app for a few months now but is limited to the US and UK. Now, all countries have access to it.

To make voice calls, you need the Facebook Messenger or Facebook app (4.0 or later). I’ll tell you more about how it works exactly in the sections below.

During testing this functionality of the Facebook app, I phoned a friend in the UK whom I had not spoken to in three years. He doesn’t have the Messenger app installed, but we were able to talk for a few minutes without any problems.

Would you ask how is the call quality? Surprisingly good. I can tell that in the last three years he has dropped his Indian accent and now, with his signature British accent, he sounds a lot like an Indian. Myke Hurley.

How to call with Facebook Messenger

Step 1: Open the Facebook Messenger app.

Step 2: Tap the contact you want to call.

Step 3: Locate Call button in the top right corner. Make sure it’s blue. If it’s black, it means the contact isn’t online or running an old version of Facebook or Facebook Messenger that doesn’t support voice calling.

Step 4: If you don’t have Facebook Messenger installed, you can still make and receive voice calls using the Facebook app. From the messaging menu, select your contact. Touch I button in the top right corner and from the options select Toll-free call.

Step 5: If the button is blue, tap it to make a VoIP call and start talking.

How to receive calls on Facebook

Step 1: You need to be alive, running the latest version of the Facebook or Facebook Messenger app (4.0 or later) and connected to a stable WiFi or data connection.

Note 1: Although the calling service is free, it uses your data connection to make calls. So if you are using a WiFi connection, your calls are practically free. However, if you are using a 3G data connection, data charges will apply. In my testing, audio sent and received from Facebook Messenger didn’t take up much bandwidth. The data counter reads 10 kbps most of the time. However, those seconds in hours add up.

Note 2: Additionally, Facebook is working with a number of carriers worldwide to waive those data charges. Check to see if you’re signed up with one of those service providers.

Step 2: Wait until a friend or acquaintance calls you. Bribe them if necessary.

Step 3: In iOS, look out for notifications on your lock screen. Since Facebook is just an app, it will send you notifications when you receive a call. Slide it up to open the app and take the call.

In Android, you get the incoming call screen directly, just like the default phone app.
