The default Voice Recorder app on iPhone takes a simplistic approach that doesn’t support the advanced recording features we see in some third-party apps. However, things changed with the recent launch of iOS 14, where Apple introduced Advanced Voice Recording along with lots of other features.
This feature reduces background noise that often irritates voice memos, resulting in extra audio files. It just messes up the voice notes when you hear the noise and everything you or anyone else says. Apple wants to change all of that with a flick of the wand, literally.
Let’s take a look at how Sound Recording works and where you can find this new enhanced Voice Recording feature along with other notable changes.
1. Create Voice Memos
There are two ways to record voice memos on iPhone running iOS 14. One is to open the app and tap the big red record button at the bottom of the screen to start recording voice/audio immediately.
Another way is to launch Control Center and tap on the Voice Memos icon to launch it. I want to tap the icon in Control Center to start recording immediately, but that’s just me.
When you’re done, tap the red button again to stop recording. You will now see records named by default based on your location. You can play, edit or delete the recording now. Click on the name of the record to change it.
Note: If you press and hold the Recording icon in Control Center, it will show you options to start a new recording or access the last recording.
2. Edit Recording
Tap the three-dot menu icon next to the memo you want to edit to select the Edit Record button.
You can move the waveform by dragging the blue handle from right to left until you reach the point where you want to edit. Tap the trim button as seen in the screenshot below to trim or remove the selected part from the audio recording.
There are two yellow hands at the ends of the memo. Drag them from left to right or vice versa and tap Cut to trim the recording. If you want to delete part of a memo, say from the center, drag and position both yellow handles to select the part you want to delete, and tap the Delete button. Don’t forget to Save the edited audio recording.
The Replace option does exactly what it says. Move the blue handle to the part that you think needs to be replaced. Tap the Replace button and it will start recording but this time it will overwrite the voice memo from that part onwards.
Move the blue handle to the end and the Replace button is replaced by a Continue button. Tapping that will resume recording from where it ended last time.
3. Reduce background noise from voice memos
This is a new feature. Do you notice background noise such as hum, fan noise, or ambient sounds? Go back to edit mode and tap the wand button on the left.
Play back the voice memo and you’ll see less background noise and less interference. It’s not one hundred percent perfect but works pretty well and gets the job done. I think Apple will continue to work on it in the future to make it better with each update.
Return to the main screen of the Voice Memos app and tap the three-dot menu icon again. You’ll find options to share that memo, copy it, and favorite it. The last one will move the memo to a smart folder.
You can now create folders in the Voice Memos app. Just go back to the home screen and tap the folder with the plus icon in the bottom right corner of the screen to do it.
Click the Edit button and select a recording to move it to the newly created folder.
Enhance your voice
The newly improved Voice Recorder app is beautiful, easy to use and comes with some cool new features that were missing before. I’m glad Apple has started paying attention to this commonly used app. Now, I won’t have to depend on third-party apps for voice notes anymore. It has enough features for me, and hopefully, you too.
