His father, Michael, is an oral surgeon, and his mother, Vivian Young, is an artist and photographer, but they both encouraged their son to concentrate on tennis from a young age.

McDonald reached the Australian Open boys’ singles semifinals in 2012. In 2012, he achieved a career-high ranking of number 12 in the ITF World Tour Junior Rankings and won the 18s singles championship at the 2012 Easter Bowl.
He won the men’s singles at the Ojai Tennis Tournament in 2013 while still a junior, and he also qualified for the 2013 Cincinnati Masters at the age of 18 by beating top 100 players Nicolas Mahut and Steve Johnson.
