As we mentioned in another entry, MKVToolNix (also known as MKVMerge) is an important (though mostly unknown) set of tools for working with MKV movie files on your Mac. In fact, the application is quite advanced, and its features are also wide-ranging, which can make first-time users who are new to it a bit confused.
So here we show you how to easily achieve three really cool things with your movies using MKVToolNix.
Let’s look at them.
Join the Video
This is a really cool feature of MKVToolNix that allows you to take any two given videos and join them together. This is especially useful for times when you’re shooting a lot of footage on something, like your iPhone, and you don’t want to have ten separate videos after exporting them.
To do this, when you have different parts of your video on your Mac, add the first part to MKVToolNix, then simply click append to add the next part in the series, etc
Once you’ve added all your video sections, just hit the . button start mixing button and MKVToolNix will join them together.
Important Note: For MKVToolNix to concatenate videos successfully, they must all share the same video codec. If you shoot all the segments with the same device, then you shouldn’t worry about this.
Remove audio from video
Have you ever downloaded a video that was too big for its duration? Well, sometimes this is because those videos include multiple audio tracks, be it audio tracks in different languages or creator audio commentary etc.
With MKVToolNix you can actually remove specific audio tracks from any video thus reducing its size to a more reasonable size.
To do this, start by adding the video file to MKVToolNix. Once you do, all the different tracks of the file will be displayed on the app.
There, uncheck the ones you want to remove and click start mixing.
Cool Tip: Alternatively, you can also add a completely different audio file to your video while removing another audio file. Or if you want, you can just delete the video completely and keep only the audio.
Once done, you’ll find that your new video file is significantly smaller than the original thanks to this simple optimization.
Add subtitles to movies
Most of us have large collections of movies. The problem with these, however, is that most of the time, those movies come with separate subtitle files, which can be easily managed if you’re very organized. Otherwise, you run the risk of getting loads of subtitle files, many of which aren’t even named correctly, making it complicated to find the right file to open with your movie.
Thankfully, with MKVToolNix, you can embed any subtitle file (or multiple subtitle files) into a single movie file.
To do this, first add the movie file to MKVToolNix. Then add the subtitle file as well. You will see the format and other important information of the subtitle file in the bottom window of the application.
Then on General tracking options tab, you can add a name for the subtitles and even choose their language, which is ideal when you’re adding multiple subtitle files.
Accordingly, on Format specific options you will be able to choose the format of the subtitles, most of the time it will be ISO-8859-2. Select that and click start mixing button.
The end result will be a perfectly synchronized movie with newly embedded subtitles.
Your go. the best part of all? That’s just a small example of what MKVToolNix is capable of. So if you feel confident, play with it a bit and find out what else it can do.
