Lock Individual Apps on Jailbroken iPhone with iAppLock

We recently ran a warning about rogue apps on the App Store that ask you to lock other apps. Android makes it easy to lock individual apps without any problems. But the way iOS is built, one app can’t lock other apps — unless you have a jailbroken device, of course.

So let’s talk about a simple app called iAppLock that I personally use to lock individual apps on my iPhone. iAppLock can be installed on iOS devices running on jailbroken iOS 7 or later. The app can be downloaded for free from the Cydia store. Once you download and restart your device, you will see the iAppLock icon on the pedal.

The first time you launch the application, it will start the initial configuration. The app will ask you to set up a PIN or pattern lock, and set a recovery email that can be used to retrieve the code in case you forget the combination. Finally, turn on Lock Status in settings to activate the app. Then navigate to the apps tab to add the individual apps you want to lock.

The first application I suggest adding here is Cydia itself. This will ensure that no one can uninstall iAppLock without your permission.

In the free version of the app, you can lock up to 5 apps, but that should be enough for beginners. The pro version removes the limit for only $3.99. So, after you add apps to the list, every time you try to open them, you have to authenticate before you can access the app. The key can be extended to uninstall apps and move app icons on Springboard.

In the app’s configuration, you can choose to delay re-locking the app once it’s unlocked. Delay lock can be set to 30 minutes before the device is locked again. The app gives the option to add trusted Wi-Fi networks to which the lock will be disabled for a while. This app has some extra features, but all those features can only be unlocked after paying for the premium version.

iAppLock is not secure

If you accidentally forgot your password lock, it can be easily recovered by pressing the . button Forgot password button. The app will send you a one-time pin verification email to unlock your device and set up a new lock.

Conclusion

The application is very easy to configure and does the task perfectly. I haven’t had any unpleasant experiences with this app and would definitely recommend it.

Users on iPhone 5S and later may find the traditional passcode and lock pattern a bit older than Touch ID, and they’re absolutely right. Why enter a password when you can use a biometric sensor? So don’t forget to follow our next article where I talk about another app that brings Touch ID functionality when locking individual apps.
