Moore was successful in college, but many observers had concerns about his ability to succeed as a professional. These concerns stemmed from his modest stature he was slightly shorter than 6 feet 0 inches (1.83 meters) at his Boise State Pro Day as well as his arm power and movement. His predicted status was either a priority free agent or a late draft pick.

In a 34–23 loss to the Washington Redskins, he completed his first home start with 435 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions.
In addition to passing for the sixth-most yards in a single game in franchise history, he became the fifth quarterback in history to throw for 400 yards or more in one outing.
He broke his right fibula on August 2, 2016, during a training camp drill. On August 30, he was placed on injured reserve.
Moore re-signed with the Cowboys on March 20, 2017. On September 5, 2017, he re-signed after the Cowboys dismissed him on September 2, 2017.
On October 26, 2017, he was let go and re-signed to the practice squad. Moore departed the NFL in 2018. Before Tua Tagovailoa entered the league in 2020, Moore was the final left-handed quarterback to compete in the NFL.
He took over as the Cowboys’ quarterbacks coach in 2018 following his retirement from the NFL, following the retirement of longtime head coach Wade Wilson. The Cowboys declared on January 31, 2019, that Moore would get a promotion to offensive coordinator.
After 10 seasons as the Cowboys’ head coach, Jason Garrett was fired. According to FOX NFL insider Jay Glazer, Mike McCarthy, the new coach, expressed interest in keeping Moore on the coaching staff, and McCarthy did just that.
Following their playoff exit, the Cowboys and Moore came to an amicable agreement to separate on January 29, 2023. Under third-year head coach Brandon Staley, Moore was hired by the Los Angeles Chargers on January 30, 2023, to serve as their new offensive coordinator.
