Keep Track of Online Subscriptions with iOS Apps

If you’re trying to keep track of your bills and avoid late fees, your iPhone and a few iOS apps can save you some money. Some apps and web services will remind you of your bills and cut your budget.

The obvious solution: Automated bill payments

With a credit card or bank bill payment service, a bill tracking app can be overkill. Today, you can automatically pay most bills through credit cards. The credit card company can then automatically deduct the bill from your bank account. For many people, remembering to pay the bill is not a problem.

The target market of these apps is people who don’t automatically pay bills because of cash flow. Automatic bill payments are risky if you don’t have enough reserves to pay your bills. If an automatic payment occurs before you have enough funds, it will bounce and cause more charges.

Mint and Mint Bills for iOS: Intuit Solution

We mentioned Mint as a budgeting app, but they also have a bill tracking service called Invoices. Mint will alert you when bills are due in the Billing Reminders section if you follow most of your accounts with them. Invoices allows you to add an invoice that doesn’t show up in Mint, especially if you’re not an active Mint user.

When you sign up for Invoices with your Mint login, you’ll add your regular bills to the website. Mint’s budget and bill sections don’t read each other. If you want to add an invoice, you will enter your supplier’s credentials. Mint requires this step even if a provider (such as a credit card) is already within Mint’s budget.

Mint reminders show up on mobile devices, but there’s no option to pay for them. You’ll need the Mint’s Bills and Money app for that feature. When the bill is due, the app allows you to pay. It even generates a receipt and stores it for you. If you pay your bill from your bank account, Mint will not charge you. If you need to pay your bill by credit card, they will charge you for that.

Bobby: iOS app to track your subscriptions and regular payments

Credit card bills can change, but subscriptions usually don’t change on renewal. Subscriptions keep renewing until you ask them to stop. Bobby keeps track of all those bills in a fun and colorful way.

Find the service you normally bill for and add it to Bobby. Tap the cost and tap Add. The bill is there. Tap it again and customize the billing cycle (monthly, yearly), when the first bill is due, the subscription term, and when you want the reminder.

I choose Backblaze as a good example. That amount has already been charged to my credit card, but I want to make sure my card hasn’t changed at the time of renewal. This app is useful when you sign up for a trial somewhere. Bobby will prompt you to cancel before they start charging you.

If the service is not on the list, they will let you add a custom account.

Bobby lets you add four free subscriptions. Then it’s an in-app purchase worth 99 cents. If you delete the subscription, it won’t count towards that limit.

AskTrim: Remove unwanted subscriptions

AskTrim is a web and SMS service that tracks your budget for potentially unwanted content. If you’re looking to cut some costs out of your budget, then AskTrim is the answer. It looks for recurring charges and suggests possible cuts or cancellations. They don’t have an iPhone app.

Instead, when you sign up for an AskTrim account, it will link to your bank account and credit card just like Mint’s Invoice service. After it finds a number of invoices, it will text you with suggestions for possible cancellations. They put that information on the web application. If you want to cancel the service, just choose to cancel or text them again, they will take care of it.

Q&ACut the cable? That’s a huge bill for many, so watch TV online for free

I haven’t tried the cancel function yet, but they do for free. If they have to call or mail, they will charge a small fee. With horror stories about people trying to cancel their cable TV accounts, AskTrim can be helpful.

Why not just use a reminder or calendar app?

That’s what I usually do (although I do in Evernote). Some people need a little extra motivation. Since these apps are free, you can do both. That way, you have more than one bill payment reminder. I like to maintain my AskTrim subscription and use Bobby to keep track of important subscriptions or stuff I need to cancel.
