Is Yevgeny Prigozhin Dead?: Yevgeny Prigozhin, officially known as Yevgeny Viktorovich Prigozhin was born on June 1, 1961, in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
He’s a Russian oligarch, mercenary leader, and former close confidant of Russian president Vladimir Putin until he launched a rebellion in June 2023
Prigozhin controlled a network of influential companies, notably the Wagner private military company, which was supported by the Russian state.
After years of denying links to the Wagner Group, in September 2022 he confirmed that he was its founder, stating that he founded it in May 2014, to support Russian proxy forces
He became well-known after taking a visible role in the war in Ukraine, where his men are fighting on behalf of Moscow after regular troops suffered heavy attrition and lost territory in humiliating setbacks
Prigozhin has since then been in the news. He openly criticized the Russian Defense Ministry for corruption and for mishandling the war against Ukraine.
In June 2023, he used the Wagner Group to launch a rebellion against the Russian military leadership, accusing the Defense Ministry of shelling Wagner soldiers.
In August 2023, Prigozhin hit major headlines after he was “presumed dead” in a plane crash in Tver Oblast, north of Moscow, along with nine other people. The plane was reportedly shot down by Russian forces.

The plane reportedly caught fire after hitting the ground and burned up. It had been in flight for less than 30 minutes. Unconfirmed reports said the jet belonged to Prigozhin, founder of the Wagner private military company.
“An investigation has been launched into the Embraer plane crash that occurred tonight in the Tver region. According to the passenger list, among them is the name and surname of Yevgeny Prigozhin,” Rosaviatsia said.
However, at this time of writing, it’s not immediately clear as to whether the Wagner boss, Yevgeny Prigozhin had boarded the flight.
Is Yevgeny Prigozhin Dead?
According to Russia’s emergency ministry, Yevgeny Prigozhin died in a plane crash on 23 August 2023. The flight was en route from Moscow to Saint Petersburg.
Reportedly, all 10 people on board the plane died. Prigozhin had been on the passenger list for the flight.
A Wagner-associated Telegram channel claimed the jet that Prigozhin was in was shot down by Russian air defenses over Tver Oblast.
