While the world certainly has several decent-sized maps, Alan Wake 2 is not strictly open-world. After completing the third chapter for each character, the game opens up and you’ll be able to roam around the likes of Bright Falls and Cauldron Lake freely, but don’t go expecting a Spider-Man 2 or Zelda: Tears of Kingdom level of freedom.

As Saga especially, you can use your car to travel between the different areas in the Pacific Northwest, so you’re not going to be staying on the same map.

However, that isn’t to say that Alan Wake 2 is strictly linear as you’re solving mysteries like finding Nightingale’s Heart, so read on to find out just how linear Alan Wake 2 is.

Alan Wake 2 is split into two stories, that of Alan Wake himself and newcomer, Saga Anderson – and each of them has their own world to run around in and you can eventually switch between them to complete in any order you like.

Once you reach the third chapter for each character, you can complete the remaining stories in any order you want, and given that Alan Wake 2 is full of twists and turns, linearity is out the window in the best possible way.

That’s everything you need to know about Alan Wake 2‘s world and linearity. If you’re looking for even more stories to explore, be sure to check out how to beat Nightingale to see what mysteries await you there.
