iPhones have come a long way. And with new features being introduced with every update, it is no surprise that Apple decided to up the ante with its latest update. Among all the newly released iOS 17 features, the one that stands out (no pun intended) the most is the StandBy mode. So, let us look closely at what it is and how you can set up and use StandBy mode on your iPhone.
The most essential prerequisite for using StandBy mode is that your device must run iOS 17. This means the option for StandBy will only be visible after you download and install the iOS 17 update. Once done, you can set up and use StandBy mode on your iPhone.
But first, let us briefly discuss what iOS 17’s StandBy mode is about.
What Is StandBy Mode in iOS 17
An upgraded version of the Always On Display, the iOS 17 StandBy mode allows your device to display information like the time, play a slideshow of your photos, show the latest weather updates, etc., all from the screen of your locked iPhone. This can help you get crucial updates or information without unlocking your device.
When enabled, StandBy mode is automatically activated. However, to do that, your iPhone needs to meet the following conditions:
- Must be running iOS 17.
- Must be connected to a charger.
- Must be in an upright horizontal position. Or, if you’re using a MagSafe stand, ensure your iPhone is docked in landscape mode.
- Must be locked.
Once all these conditions are met, StandBy will be activated on your iPhone. Additionally, if you’re using a MagSafe stand, you can also take advantage of its Location Awareness feature, which will change the StandBy widgets when docked in different places based on your preferences.
Moreover, you can manually change the StandBy by swiping left-right to change layouts and up-down to change widgets.
iPhones That Support StandBy Mode
Does your iPhone support StandBy? Well, here’s a list of devices eligible for the iOS 17 update and, by extension, can use StandBy mode.
How to Activate StandBy Mode in iOS 17
By default, StandBy mode is enabled in iOS 17. However, like most features, you can enable or disable it at your convenience. So, if you’ve been having issues getting it to work or have previously disabled the feature, here’s how to activate StandBy mode in iOS 17.
Step 1: Open the Settings menu on your device.
Step 2: Scroll down and tap on StandBy.
Step 3: Turn on the toggle for StandBy.
Note: You can also turn the toggle off to disable StandBy.
This will enable StandBy on your iPhone. Additionally, if you often use your device in low-lighting conditions, you can turn on Night Mode to dim the display.
Step 4: Turn on the toggle for Night Mode.
Now, once your iPhone is placed in low lighting, it will automatically dim the display and give your screen a red tint to make it easier on the eyes.
Change or Customize StandBy Style on iPhone
Once StandBy mode is enabled, you can see the relevant widgets on your screen. However, if there are certain widgets you wish to add, like an album or battery percentage, you can do that by using the StandBy settings menu.
This will allow you to add other widgets to your StandBy display. Then, you can swipe up and down to switch between widgets. Follow the below steps to do it.
Note: If you’re using any pre-existing layouts in StandBy, swipe left until you come to the widgets screen. Otherwise, you can’t customize the StandBy mode widgets.
1. Customize Clock Face
Step 1: Once StandBy mode opens, long-press on any of the visible widgets. Or, long-press on the corners of your screen.
Step 2: If prompted, enter your password or unlock the device using Face ID.
Step 3: In the top left corner, tap on the + icon.
Step 4: Scroll through the list of available widgets and tap on Clock.
Step 5: Here, swipe left or right to scroll through all the available watch faces.

This will save your changes and add the Clock widget to your StandBy screen.
2. Add Photos
Step 1: Either long-press a widget or long-press on their side of the screen once your device is in StandBy mode. Enter the passcode or use Face ID if prompted.
Step 2: Tap on the + icon.
Step 3: From the widgets, tap on Photos.
Step 4: Now, swipe through the widget suggestions and find the one you wish to add.
Step 5: Then, go to the relevant widget and tap on Add Widget.
Step 6: Here, tap on ‘Smart Rotate’ and ‘Widget Suggestions’ to ensure your iPhone rotates the photo accordingly and gives you the relevant widget suggestions.
Step 7: Then, tap on Done.
This will turn your iPhone into a smart display with a photo carousel whenever StandBy mode is activated.
3. Add Other Widgets

Enter your password or unlock the device using Face ID if prompted.

Step 3: Once the widget’s window opens, scroll through the list of widgets currently available. Or, scroll to the bottom and tap on Other.
Step 4: This will open a list of apps whose widgets are currently available but have not been optimized for StandBy mode.
Step 5: Once you find the relevant widget, tap on Add Widget.
Step 6: Tap on Done.
This will allow you to add the relevant widget to your StandBy mode screen on your iPhone.
4. Remove Widgets
Step 1: Long-press on any visible widgets or long-press on the corners of your screen in StandBy mode. Unlock your device if prompted.
Step 2: Then, scroll through the list of added widgets.
Step 3: Here, you can also change the widget order.
Step 4: Or, if you wish to remove any widget, go to the widget and tap on the – icon.
Step 5: Then, tap on Remove.
Step 6: This will instantly remove the widget from your StandBy mode screen. Repeat this process for any other widgets you wish to remove.
Step 7: Then, tap on Done.
This will exit the edit widget screen and enable StandBy mode. If you wish to re-add any widget, use the abovementioned ways.
Set Up Standby Mode Notification Settings on iPhone
Besides changing or customizing the StandBy style on your iPhone, you can also customize how your device displays your notifications once StandBy is activated. Here’s how to do it.
Note: StandBy must be enabled to access these settings.
Step 1: Open Settings and tap on StandBy.
Step 2: Here, turn on the toggle for Show Notification and ‘Show Preview on Tap Only’.
This will ensure your iPhone shows the notification but only gives a preview if you physically tap on the screen. If you don’t wish to receive notifications or want full notification previews when your device is on StandBy, you can enable or disable these toggles accordingly.
