Richard Pryor suffered his third heart attack on the morning of December 10, 2005, nine days after his 65th birthday, in his Los Angeles home. After his wife’s unsuccessful attempts to resuscitate him, he was rushed to a Westside hospital and pronounced dead at 7:58 a.m. PST. Jennifer, his widow, stated, “At the end, there was a smile on his face.”

He was cremated, and his remains were distributed to his relatives. His widow dispersed his ashes on the bay of Hana, Hawaii, in 2019.

Forensic pathologist Michael Hunter believes Pryor’s deadly heart attack was caused by coronary artery disease, which was at least partly caused by years of tobacco smoking.

Pryor suffered a small heart attack in November 1977, at the age of 36, following several years of excessive smoking and drinking. He recovered and resumed performances in January of the following year. In 1986, he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Pryor suffered a second heart attack while visiting Australia in 1990. He had triple heart bypass surgery in 1991.

In late 2004, his sister said that he had lost his voice due to multiple sclerosis. However, on January 9, 2005, Pryor’s wife, Jennifer Lee, rebutted this statement in a post on Pryor’s official website, quoting Richard as saying: “I’m sick of hearing this garbage about me not talking… not true… I have good and terrible days… but I’m still a talkin’ motherfucker!”
