John Schnabel is an American gold miner who had a net worth of $7 million when he died in 2016. The Schnabels are part of the cast of “Gold Rush Alaska,” popularly known as “Gold Rush,” a series about a gang of gold miners who try to make a life digging for gold in Alaska and the Klondike. He appeared in the first six seasons of Gold Rush, but his health deteriorated, and he left the show.

Who is John Schnabel married to?

John Schnabel married Erma Dire in 1950. Their family consists of two daughters, one son, Roger Schnabel, and two sons, Parker and Payson Schnabel.

At the age of 67, John had a successful triple bypass open heart surgery. On March 18, 2016, at the age of 96, John Schnabel died in his sleep at his Oakland, California, home.

Meanwhile, Schnabel was born in Kansas on February 11, 1920. Schnabel’s first employment was as a paper boy, and he used his first payment to buy bread and cheese for his poor family. When John was a child, his family was forced to flee to Alaska after the authorities apprehended them as bootleggers.

At the age of 19, he joined his father in operating a sawmill in Alaska, and he served in WWII in 1939, joining the US Army Air Corps following the attack on Pearl Harbor. John served in the Army from 1941 to 1946.

Schnabel controlled the Big Nugget mine in Alaska. He also owned the Gold Nugget Mine in Porcupine Creek, Alaska, which he purchased at the age of 68 as a way to stay active. His son, Roger Schnabel, is also a part-owner. Parker Schnabel, his grandson, who was just 17 years old when he started and will be 28 in 2022, now controls the family mine and hopes to maintain it profitable so that it can continue to be a family business.

The Discovery Channel’s executive producers approached John in 2009 with a proposition to feature him and his family in a reality show. “Gold Rush Alaska” premiered in December 2010 and begins its eighth season in 2017.

Mr. Schnabel’s mine has been very profitable for a long time, and other mining firms frequently seek assistance or instruction from Big Nugget. John Schnabel had a well-publicized heart attack, which was a major plot point in the reality show’s second season.

Schnabel elected to retire from daily mining labor in 2014, but he continued to contribute his decades of experience to help his son and grandson navigate the competitive and unforgiving gold mining profession.

He gave Big Nugget Mine to his grandsons. Season 12 of “Gold Rush” premiered in March 2022.
