Whenever I talk about installing any system update or ROM on Android from recovery, I always insist on checking the file’s MD5 checksum to ensure the integrity of the file. There are many free tools for Windows with which you can calculate and compare file checksums quite easily.
If you have directly downloaded the file on your device and are looking for a way to verify the checksum on the device itself, then Android File Verifier is a great app that can help you. To get started, download and install Android File Verifier (AFV) on your device and launch it. On the main screen, SFV will ask you to select the file you want to check the hash of. Knock on Select file to open a list of files and folders on your SD card.
Navigate to the file for which you want to check the hash bits and long press on it to open the options menu.
Select the hash algorithm you want to use for the calculation and tap it. The app then starts calculating the checksum for the file, and once it’s done, it displays the bits as well as copies it to the device’s clipboard.
You can also check the integrity of the Nandroid backup folders you created using restore by selecting the option to Nandroid backup verification on the directory itself.
This tool is great for those who frequently flash their device ROMs and install files using system updates. While the comfort of the application is not comparable to the windows tool, once you have the file on your device it is much easier to check the checksum bits directly than mounting the device in mass memory mode.
