The default Notes app on iPhone and Mac has a folder/subfolder style for organizing notes. That changes with iOS 15 as Apple is introducing tags for the iPhone, iPad, and Mac notes app to organize your notes. Here’s how to use tags in the Apple Notes app.
With the latest Notes app on Apple’s hardware, the company is stealing Evernote’s best feature for organizing notes on iPhone and Mac. If you’re considering switching from Evernote or Bear to Apple Notes, now is the perfect time to make the leap.
Apple’s implementation may seem basic at first, but dig deeper and you’ll see a secret weapon called Smart Folders that takes the whole note-organizing experience to the next level. Let’s talk about everything in detail.
In true Apple style, all Notes features are available on all platforms, including iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. In the screenshots below, we’re using the Notes app from the iPhone. You can expect similar functionality on iPad and Mac.
Note: Tag functionality in the Apple Notes app is available on iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and macOS 12.0 Monterey. They are currently in beta. You can download the relevant operating system at your own risk or wait for Apple to release a stable version this fall.
Keeping the above notes in mind, let’s get started.
Step 1: Open the Notes app on your iPhone.
Step 2: Open any note or create a new one from scratch.
Step 3: While writing notes, you can create a relevant #tag for quick search.
In the screenshots below, we’ve added #GT and #Writing tags to identify relevant notes.
Step 4: Immediately after adding the tag, you will see the Tag Creation Notes section on the Folders page.
Cards appear below iCloud, Gmail, and Outlook notes in the app. Tap the little arrow icon and you can expand the cards.
Here, you’ll see all of your created cards in Apple Notes. Tap All Tags and expand the list of tags. Here’s how the cards look on Apple Notes for Mac.
Organize Notes with Tags in Apple Notes
Open your Notes in Apple Notes and start adding relevant tags to each note. If you add too many tags, it will be difficult for you to find the relevant note from the tag menu.
Unfortunately, there is no way to organize tags through nested tags. It’s a term popularized by the Bear note-taking app on the iPhone. It allows users to create sub-tags below the main tag.
For example, one can create a main Finance card and add Crypto, Budget, Bank and similar finance related cards under it. Maybe Apple is keeping it for future updates? We shall see.
Unfortunately, there’s no way to remove tags from the Apple Note sidebar or the tags menu on iPhone.
You have to go to the relevant notes and delete the individual tags. Only then will you see the cards disappear from the Apple Notes app.
This is a killer feature from Apple Notes. You can automatically create folders and add notes to them based on tags. Sounds interesting doesn’t it? Here’s how to use Smart Folders in Apple Notes.
Step 1: Open the Apple Notes app on your iPhone.
Step 2: Click the create folder option at the bottom.
Step 3: Select the New Smart Folder option.
Step 4: Give the folder a suitable name and select the tags below it.
Step 5: Tap Done at the top.
Apple Notes will create a Smart Folder for you. It’s different from other folders in the Notes app. You’ll notice a little gear icon next to the folder indicating it’s a Smart Folder.
As soon as you add the defined tags to any note, Apple Notes automatically adds them to the created Smart Folder. Neat, right? The possibilities are endless here, and we can see this functionality saving countless hours of manual work to move notes between folders in Apple Notes.

Apple is finally taking the default apps seriously with the latest OS updates. On the surface, tags may look like a small add-on, but add Smart Folders to the mix and you can see how satisfied end users are with the new additions. Notes app.
