Live captions are an accessibility feature in Windows 11 that provides automatic transcription of any video or audio on your PC. While this feature is primarily designed for the hearing impaired, anyone can subtitle a podcast, video, or song.
Live captioning is only available on Windows 11 22H2 and later. So make sure you’re running the latest build of Windows. Once done, you can use the following guide to enable and use live captions in Windows 11.
How to enable Live Subtitles on Windows 11
By default, Windows gives you the option to enable System-level Live Captions on your computer. Check out how you can enable live captions on your Windows 11 PC.
Step 1: Right-click on the Start icon and select Settings from the list.
Step 2: Use the left pane to navigate to the Accessibility tab.
Step 3: In the Hearing section, tap Subtitles.
Step 4: Enable Live Captions option. Then select I Agree when the pop-up appears at the top of the screen.
If you’re using this feature for the first time, you’ll see a prompt to download the subtitle language file directly. Click the Download button to continue. Then you won’t need an internet connection to use live subtitles in Windows 11.
After the ‘Ready for subtitles’ message appears, you can start using live captions on Windows 11.
How to use Live Subtitles on Windows 11
After enabling live captions, play any video on your PC and the subtitles will appear on your screen. Live captioning will also work with audio files, allowing you to listen to your favorite songs while reading the lyrics. It should be noted that live captioning currently only supports one language—English (United States).
In addition to audio and video files, live captions also work when you’re on a video call with someone. By default, it will only show captions while someone else is speaking. To view subtitles for your voice, simply click the gear icon in the subtitles window, navigate to the Subtitles option, and select ‘Include microphone audio’ from the submenu.
You’ll then see a caption for your speech. Since live captions are created on your device, you won’t have to worry about Microsoft sending your voice data to the cloud.
You can position the caption box as you see fit. To do so, click the gear icon in the subtitles window, go to Location and choose from the available options.
After using live captions, click the cross icon on the subtitles window to close it. You can use the Windows + Ctrl + L key combination to turn on live subtitles on Windows quickly.
How to customize live captions on Windows 11
Windows 11 allows you to customize the subtitle text, size, font and other aspects so that you can read the subtitles easily.
To customize live captions on Windows 11, follow the steps below.
Step 1: Press Windows key + I to launch the Settings app. Switch to the Accessibility tab and click Annotations.
Alternatively, you can also click the cog icon in the subtitle window and select Caption Style.
Step 2: Use the drop-down menu next to Subtitle Style to choose from the available options.
If you want to personalize a particular caption style, click the Edit button.
You can change the text color, font, size, opacity and effects from this menu.
You can also change the live caption background and window color. All your changes are automatically saved and you can preview them in Theme Preview.
Finally, you can easily change the name of the caption style to identify it.
How to add captions directly to the quick settings panel
You can also turn subtitles on or off directly from the Quick Settings menu. You will have to add the Accessibility tile to the Quick Settings panel. Here’s how to go about it.
Step 1: Press the Windows + A key combination to access the Quick Settings panel.
Step 2: Click on the pencil icon to edit the panel.
Step 3: Click More and select Accessibility from the resulting menu.
Step 4: Click Done to save the changes.
After you complete the steps above, click the Accessibility tile in Quick Settings and enable or disable Live Captions on Windows 11.

Live Captions is definitely a useful addition to Windows 11, especially for people with hearing problems. While it currently only supports English (US), you can expect Microsoft to add more languages in the future.
