Apple is known for making some of the best cameras on the iPhone. With iOS 16 and macOS Ventura, you can now use your iPhone’s main camera as a webcam with your Mac. While your MacBook’s HD camera may not be great, you can get the most out of your iPhone’s camera.
If you’re an iPhone and Mac user, you don’t need to be satisfied with a below-average webcam or buy a new webcam from another manufacturer. With Continuity Camera, Apple has made it easy to use an iPhone as a webcam on a Mac.
Before you begin, meet the following conditions to use the Continuity Camera feature without problems.
Requires continuous camera
- An iPhone 8 or later running iOS 16 or later.
- Mac running macOS Venture or higher. macOS Ventura is currently in public beta, and you can try it out before it goes live on your Mac. The stable version will be available to the public later this year.
- Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on iPhone and Mac.
- Sign in with the same Apple ID on your iPhone and Mac.
- Camera stand to hold your iPhone on your Mac screen.
Some Continuity Camera features like Center Stage, Desk View, and Studio Light are limited to newer iPhone models (more on that later).
Update iPhone to iOS 16
You won’t find the Continuity Camera option on older iPhone models. Follow the steps below to install the latest iOS version on your iPhone.
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
Step 2: Scroll to General.
Step 3: Open ‘Software Update.’
Step 4: Download and install the latest iOS version.

Update your Mac to macOS Ventura
Here’s how you can install the latest macOS Ventura update on your Mac (if available).
Step 1: Select the small Apple icon in the top left corner.
Step 2: Open System Preferences.
Step 3: Select Software Update and install the pending macOS update from the following menu.
Enable Continuity Camera on iPhone
First, you must enable the Continuity Camera option on your iPhone. Go through the steps below.
Step 1: Launch Settings on iPhone.
Step 2: Open the General menu.
Step 3: Select ‘AirPlay & Handoff’.
Step 4: Enable the ‘Continuous Camera’ toggle.
You can now use your iPhone as a webcam for your Mac when both devices are in close proximity.
Use iPhone as Webcam on Mac
Now that you’ve met all the conditions, it’s time to use your iPhone camera as a webcam on your Mac. This functionality works with FaceTime, third-party apps like Zoom and Microsoft Teams, and even on the web via Google Meet. You need a video app and change your preferred camera from Mac webcam to iPhone camera. Take a look at Microsoft Teams as an example.
Step 1: Launch Microsoft Teams on your Mac.
Step 2: Select Microsoft Teams in the menu bar.
Step 3: Open Preferences.
Step 4: Select Devices from the sidebar.
Step 5: Scroll to Camera and expand the menu. Choose your iPhone camera and voila!
Step 6: You can check out your dramatically improved video feed in Teams.
Step 7: Your iPhone screen will show several options to pause or disconnect the video feed.
Step 8: Take the iPhone stand and place it on the Mac screen at the appropriate height and angle.
You can now compose or join video meetings and get complimented on the quality of your video feed.
Continuous camera video effect test
Apple didn’t enable the iPhone camera on the Mac and called it a date. You can also use the great features of the camera during video calls. Continuity Camera enables features like Center Stage, Portrait, Studio Light, and Desk View. This is the way.
- Portrait mode is available on iPhone 8 and later models.
- Center Stage and Desk View features are accessible on iPhone 11 and later.
- Studio Light video effects are compatible with iPhone 12 and later models.
Here’s how you can access and use your iPhone’s video effects on your Mac.
Step 1: Select the Control Center icon on the menu bar.
Step 2: Click Video Effects.
Portrait: Blur the background in the video feed. It is very useful when you have messy background during call.
Table View: It uses your iPhone’s ultra-wide camera to capture the table. Your video feed also persists.
Center Zone: Center Zone keeps you in center frame during video calls.
Studio Light: This feature uses your iPhone’s flash to brighten images during calls.
After you finish your video calls, remove your iPhone from your Mac and tap Disconnect to turn off Continuity Camera.
Get a crystal clear video feed on Mac
Apple has had success with the implementation of Continuity Camera on the Mac. We ran into some hiccups during our testing, but we’re sure Apple will fix the bugs before releasing this functionality to the public this fall.
