Microsoft’s brand new email service, Outlook.com, was built with at least one thing in mind: allowing users to
Take actions with fewer clicks
than before or less when compared to what other email interfaces are offering. That’s what we feel from
review on Outlook.com Mail
that we did.
Allowing users to enable Gmail and Yahoo Mail shortcuts on the Outlook interface also belongs to the same idea. Additionally, a dedicated feature called Instant Actions has been made available to support this topic- “They made this feature so you don’t have to open the message to take action on it.”
Instant actions appear next to the sender name/subject line on the message list (second column on the home page) when hovering over a message. And as shown in the image (below), the tools to mark messages as read, delete messages, and flag messages appear by default.
But then there are many other things that can be associated with this simple framework. In fact, one can pair all the tools available on the interface toolbar.
Steps to Customize Instant Actions
If you feel there is some potential in these little icons and they can save you time, you should customize them to your needs. This is the way: –
Step 1: On Outlook home page navigate to Outlook Settings -> More Mail Settings.
Step 2: On the Options page, click Instant action Put under Customize Outlook part.
Step 3: Make sure that the box reads Show instant action chosen; Deselecting means you are choosing to turn it off.
As you can see, there are two sections created in the pane- Shown on hover And Always on display. And you can choose what appears in which sections, or choose the priority (order of appearance) of a tool by moving it up or down.
The best part is being able to add more actions to the set. Click more action and select an action to add. Let us try and add classify.
Wait, I just selected it and it’s already added. You can then choose a category and associate it with a color for your understanding.
Here’s how to prevent my notifications from appearing after I add a few actions to an existing list. You may want to add more.
Step 4: Don’t forget to click Save before exiting.
Conclusion
Personally, I feel that this is a great productivity booster in this interface and we will see more of that in the coming days. Although this is just a preview version, I am quite impressed with how everything is designed. You may want to migrate to @Outlook, try it out and share your good and bad experiences with us.
