Firefox’s address bar (aka awesome bar) is a useful feature because it remembers your bookmarks as well as the sites you’ve visited previously and suggests them as you type your query.
All of that sounds great unless the history contains private stuff, which you don’t want others to see (you know what I mean????). Imagine you’re trying to help a family member find something online and that unexpected result shows up in the awesome bar. Not cool, right? Fortunately, there is a private browsing mode in Firefox that allows you to browse the web privately i.e. without storing your browsing history.
This article will tell you how to quickly enable private browsing in Firefox. It will also show how to always start Firefox in private browsing mode (in case you don’t use Firefox as your default browser and just want it for private browsing).
Private Browsing
The private browsing feature in Firefox allows you to browse websites without saving any information about the pages or pages you have visited. In other words, it does not save visited pages, forms and search bar entries, passwords, downloads and cookies.
How to enable Private Browsing
Open your Firefox browser. Go to Tools -> Start Private Browsing. Or just press Ctrl+Shift+P on your keyboard.
A small window will pop up asking you to start private browsing. Click the “Start Private Browsing” button. All your current tabs will be available once you’re done browsing in private.
The private browsing information screen will be available. Now Firefox will not record any browsing information.
How to permanently enable Private Browsing
If you intend to always start Firefox in private browsing mode, you need to do the following.
Go to Tools -> Options.
Click the Privacy tab -> Firefox will -> “Use custom settings for history”.
Now check the box next to “Automatically start Firefox during a private browsing session”. Click OK.
Now restart your browser. From now on, it will always start in private browsing mode by default.
If you’re using multiple Firefox profiles, this private browsing setting only applies to your current profile. To apply the same setting on another profile, you will have to switch to that profile and perform the action again.
