While Google Chrome is notorious for hogging system memory, we often find ourselves using multiple tabs. And one of the most frustrating things about using multiple tabs is not being able to tell them apart.
While you can hover over a tab to see its title, the text in the pop-up is too small and barely visible. That’s why Google introduced Tab Hover in the latest version of Chrome (v75).
This feature aims to make identifying tabs a lot easier by displaying an info card when you hover your cursor over a tab. Unfortunately, the feature is not currently enabled by default and remains hidden in the experimental Chrome flag.
Enable Tab Hover Cards in Google Chrome
If you’re not familiar with how Chrome flags work, just follow these steps to enable Tab Hover in your browser:
Step 1: Go to Chrome Flags page by typing chrome://flags/ in the address bar and press enter.
Step 2: In the next page, look for “hover over” tabs and then click the drop-down menu next to settings.
Step 3: Select Enabled from the drop-down menu to enable Tab Hover Card.
Step 4: Once you’ve enabled the feature, click the Relaunch Now button in the bottom right corner to restart Chrome.
With that, you have now enabled Hover Cards on Google Chrome. To check, just hover your cursor over any tab and you’ll see a much larger pop-up card with all the information about that tab.
But that’s not all, Google has introduced another additional setting that will show you a small image preview of the open web page. You can enable it from the same flags page, by clicking on the drop-down menu next to the Tab Hover Card Image option.
You can then select Enabled from the drop-down menu and then click the Relaunch Now button in the bottom right corner to restart Chrome. When Chrome restarts, you’ll notice that if you hover your mouse pointer over a tab, it shows a small preview image of that tab.
It should be noted that both of these features are experimental and may not work as expected on all websites. As you can see in the attached image, Tab Hover Card Image option only shows enlarged thumbnail of website logo in my case.
Now that you’ve enabled both Tab Hover Tag and Tab Hover Tag Image, let’s take a look at some other Chrome flags you can enable to improve your browsing experience:
Turn on Smooth Scrolling
Scrolling on Chrome can look a bit clunky, especially on sites with a lot going on. Thankfully, Google provides a Smooth Scrolling flag to fix that problem. Follow these steps to enable Smooth Scrolling in Chrome:
Step 1: Go to Chrome Flags page by typing chrome://flags/ in the address bar and press enter.
Step 2: In the next page, search for smooth scrolling then click the drop-down menu next to settings.
Step 3: Select Enabled from the drop-down menu and then click the Relaunch Now button in the bottom right corner to restart Chrome.
That will enable smooth scrolling. Then, when you try scrolling down a busy web page, you’ll notice that it’s not as jittery as it used to be. Pretty neat, isn’t it?
Turn on the focus tab
Chrome also has a cool focus mode that you can enable if you want to read content in the browser without distraction. Follow these steps to enable the Spotlight flag for a better reading experience:
Step 1: Again, go to Chrome Flags page by typing chrome://flags/ in the address bar and press enter.
Step 2: On the next page, search for the focus tabs and then click the drop-down menu next to the flag.
Step 3: Click Enabled in the drop-down menu and then click Relaunch Now.
Step 4: When Chrome restarts, right-click the tab and select Focus on this tab from the following menu.
That will open the tab in a separate window which eliminates clutter and allows you to focus on the important content on the site. Again, please note that since this is an experimental feature, it may not work on all sites.
Disable autoplay videos
Autoplaying videos are another annoyance that can really hinder your browsing experience. Especially those who play with sound. But you can use the Autoplay Policy flag to put an end to that. Just follow these steps to enable the flag:
Step 1: Open Chrome Flags page by typing chrome://flags/ in the address bar and press enter.
Step 2: Search for the autoplay policy in the following page and then click the drop-down menu next to the flag.
Step 3: Select the User Document to activate from the drop-down menu and then click the Relaunch Now button.
Once enabled, the flag will prevent sites from running autoplay video ads. However, this feature is not perfect in any way and you may still see a few video ads running on websites from time to time.
Enable these Chrome flags now
So now that you know how to enable Tab Hover and some other cool Chrome flags, what are you waiting for?
