How to Turn Off Windows 7 Taskbar Thumbnail Previews

I like the Windows 7 taskbar thumbnail preview because it shows the contents of the window (albeit just the thumbnail) and supports quick swapping of open windows. However, you may have a different perspective on it and may consider it an absolute disturbance while you are working.

If that’s true, let me tell you that you can easily turn off the thumbnail preview. Having done that, you’ll only see the window’s title when hovering over an icon on the taskbar (like the one in the image below).

Steps to disable taskbar thumbnail preview

Make sure you are logged in as an administrator before starting to review the steps elaborated below.

Step 1: Right click on Computer (there are many places to do it) and click to launch it Property.

Step 2: Navigate to the left pane of the window that opens, you’ll find a link for Advanced system setup. Click this link.

Step 3: Dialog for System properties will open. Keep the mark on High level tab and click Setting button below Efficiency part.

Step 4: A new window for Performance options will pop up. select Customs radio button and then uncheck read option Enable desktop component.

That’s it. Click Apply And Alright before your preview is resolved to what you like.

Steps for Vista Users/Alternatives for Windows 7

If you are a Vista user, you can try doing this through the Local Group Policy Editor. Below is the detailed step-by-step process.

Note: This tool is only available in the Ultimate, Enterprise and Professional (Business) editions of Windows Vista and 7.

Step 1: Open the Run dialog box by pressing Windows + R simultaneously and run the command gpedit.msc.

Step 2: On Local Group Policy Editor window, navigate to User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Start Menu and Taskbar from the left pane.

Step 3: Click Standard tab at the bottom of the interface. Now scroll the list until you come across Turn off taskbar thumbnails.

Step 4: Double click on option and check reading radio button Enabled. This will disable the taskbar thumbnail preview.
