How to Transfer Files and Settings between Windows PCs

One of the biggest challenges after upgrading a phone or computer is transferring all the data from the old device to the new device. While changing phones is more frequent than upgrading desktops or laptops, when the day comes, it can really give you a rough time. We’ve seen a number of apps that can help you transition seamlessly when it comes to smartphones, even if you’re changing platforms. But we’ve never paid much attention to the PC front.

That said, Microsoft has partnered with Laplink to provide a free PC transfer tool to users for hassle-free upgrades. Since most users will be upgrading to Windows 10, Microsoft has made the tool available for free for at least a year to make it easier for users to use. So let’s see how we can use this tool to transfer most of the files and settings from the old PC to the new PC.

Note: Because the transfer happens in real time, you must connect both computers to the same Wi-Fi network at a given time. Having done that, just follow the steps mentioned below.

Use Laplink PCmover to transfer files and settings

Step 1: Download and install the Laplink PCmover application on both computers. During the installation process, you will be asked to enter your name and email address. Fill in all the details and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup. Once the setup is complete, run the application. We will first configure the old PC, where all the files and settings will be prepared for transfer.

Step 3: The application will scan your PC and this process can take a considerable amount of time depending on the size of your hard drive and the performance of your computer. Once the analysis is complete, you will be asked to open the application to the new PC where the files and settings need to be transferred.

Step 4: On the new PC, open Laplink PCmover and log in with the same email that you used when configuring the old computer. Select that you want this to be your new PC and continue.

Step 5: Now you will be asked to select the wireless network you want to scan. If PCmover is running, it will automatically show up in the list. However, if that doesn’t show up in the list, try connecting manually. Mostly it’s a regular firewall problem.

Note: Transferring files over Wi-Fi can be very slow and if you have a LAN wire to make a P2P connection it would be better to use it.

Step 6: Finally, review all the files and settings you want to transfer from your old PC to your new PC and start the transfer process. If you are using a Wi-Fi connection, the process may take a long time. Even on a wired connection, it’s pretty high. Leave both PCs turned on during the night with the process running in the background.

Conclusion

So that’s how you can use PCmover to transfer files and settings from your old computer to your new one. The application will not transfer installed programs and only works for independent files and folders. The app is free until August 31, 2016 but that’s a tentative date. Microsoft may expand the partnership depending on the usefulness of the product. If you face any problem while using the app, you can post it on our forum.
