How to Set Up and Use Family Passwords on iPhone

The default password manager on iPhone, iPad and Mac has received a big boost with the latest iOS 17, iPadOS 17 and macOS Sonoma respectively. Now you can securely share passwords and passwords with your family and trusted contacts. It solves the great inconvenience of sharing passwords with others on untrusted platforms. Here’s how to create groups, invite members, and sync your chosen passwords.

Let’s say you share your Amazon, Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, and other accounts with your partner, children, and other family members. Instead of sending login details via Messages, WhatsApp, or other platforms, create a group in iCloud Passwords and add your trusted contacts. Set up a family password on your iPhone.

Note: The ability to create a ‘Family Password’ is only available on iOS 17 or iPadOS 17 and the latest macOS Sonoma. The latest operating system is now available in developer beta. What is the family password in iOS 17

The ‘Family Password’ function is part of iCloud Keychain, where you can create groups and share relevant login details with your group, friends or family members. Your data is end-to-end encrypted and stored securely on iCloud.

You are not limited to just creating a group. You can create groups and share passwords with several contacts on the go. For example, you can share your bank, Wi-Fi, and other company details with a co-owner. Similarly, you can share credit cards and social media logins with your spouse.

You can always add a new password and update an existing one. Team members can also enter their passwords to share them with you and others.

Request family password group

The family password may not work as expected for a number of reasons. Be sure to follow the requirements below to get started.

  • Your team member’s iPhone needs to be running iOS 17 or later.
  • Members need to accept your invitation to join the family password group.
  • Team members need to enable iCloud Keychain on their accounts to keep password changes in sync.
  • To invite someone to a group, they need to be in your contact list.

Set up a family password in iOS 17

Before you begin, note that you have full control over the type of data you share with trusted contacts on your iPhone. You can delete group members at any time, and even delete the entire group for everyone. Start.

Step 1: Open Settings on your iPhone and scroll to Passwords.

Step 2: Authenticate yourself and tap Get Started under Family Passwords. Click Continue. You can also press + at the top and select ‘New Shared Group’.

Step 3: Enter the group name at the top. Tap Add people.

Step 4: Search for the contact’s name and tap Add.

Step 5: Click Create in the upper right corner.

Step 6: Select the password and passcode you want to transfer to this group. Click Move.

Step 7: The system asks you to notify that person. Members will have access to the passwords you have shared. Be careful not to share your personal social media and bank accounts (unless you completely trust them with your data). Tap Message Notifications.

Step 8: Enter a comment and press Submit.

Invited group members need to accept the invitation to check out the group and shared items.

When you share passwords in a group, a small group icon is added below those items in the Passwords list. Your team members can also add new passwords to the group. iCloud adds those items to your account with the same group icon.

How to add or remove people in the password group

You can always add or remove password entries from a specific group. You can also remove group members. This is the way.

Step 1: Open Password in Settings (check the steps above).

Step 2: Select your current group.

Step 3: Press + in the top right corner to add a new password or transfer an existing password to the group.

Step 4: Click Manage. You can edit the group name, invite more people, and delete existing people.

At any time, you can edit the existing password and have that change reflect for everyone in the group. If you want to remove the password from the group share, swipe left on an entry and select Remove.

Delete password group on iPhone

If you no longer want to share a password in a group, remove it using the steps below.

Step 1: Open a password group on your iPhone (refer to the steps above).

Step 2: Click Manage and select ‘Delete Group’.
