Sync icon

We talked about

add contacts from email account to Windows Phone 8

. If you have tried then you must understand that the process actually includes

set up an email account on your phone

. That by default makes your emails sync to your device.

Now, maybe you have multiple accounts set up but only want to update from one or two of them. Or, maybe you’re better off with manual updates and only viewing them when needed.

That is what we will discuss today. We will see what synchronization options we have in the Windows Phone 8 platform and how to manage them.

Note: The Windows Phone 8 device used for this post is a Nokia Lumia 920. The steps are the same for all WP8 phones.

Set download and sync frequency

When you navigate to Settings -> email + accounts you will see a list of accounts added to your phone. Select the one you want to manage. The settings page should look like the one shown below.

Email account settings

Here you can choose how often your phone will fetch emails from your account. In addition, you can choose the length of time that messages will be downloaded.

Download sync frequency

Another way to open an email account is to tap on the dedicated app created for email accounts. It will be on the Start Screen and on the application list (swipe left on the Start Screen).

Tile direct mail account

That will take you to your mailbox. You can press the sync button (third from left) or check other options by tapping the 3-dots icon….

If you want to link another account with an existing one, you can set it up via inbox link select. That way, you can sync all your inboxes under one roof.

On Disable Folder Sync

Most people have a folder structure and filtering rules enabled in their accounts. And, the reasoning behind is that not all messages are important. So you can set up sync what you really need.

In the selected account, go to the 3 dots icon and navigate to the folders. If a folder is already synced, it will show up there. Open it and you will have a reading option do not sync this folder.

Turn off folder sync

If your directory isn’t listed, it’s out of sync. Click to show all folderschoose one from the list and tap sync this folder if that’s what you want to do.

Enable folder sync

Conclusion

I feel these are enough options for mobile to provide email and account settings. Do you feel this is enough? Or, are you missing something that can help you be more productive? Share with us in the comments section.
