How to Schedule or Delay Email Delivery In MS Outlook

Have you ever been in a situation where you wanted to send email(s) at a specific date and time but knew you wouldn’t be able to do so? There can be many reasons behind this, such as unfavorable timing, your busy schedule, or no computer or phone.

While there is a useful solution to this for Gmail, as Boomerang, I haven’t been able to explore much for other email services yet. I mean it is possible to compose messages and schedule or delay their delivery to a very specific and precise date/time.

However, this trick is very simple for MS Outlook users. And ever since I switched to using the client, it worked like a lifesaver for me. Here are the steps.

Steps to schedule Outlook mailing

All you need to do is make a small plan for your email and follow these two simple steps.

Step 1: Start creating a new email. Navigate to Option tab and click delivery delay under the section for Another choice.

Late Delivery Option

Step 2: Under Delivery optionscheck the box read No pre-delivery. Then, set the date and time that you want your email to be sent.

Schedule Date Time

Optional: The above two steps should be quite enough to configure what you need. But what if something goes wrong and your message isn’t delivered on time? What if it was sent at a time (later than desired) that rendered the message meaningless?

You would rather that the mail is not delivered, if not on time. So I recommend you also check the box read Expires later and set a date and time against it. This means that the message will not be delivered/attempted to deliver after the expiration time if the schedule fails for some reason.

Step 3: Click Close and rest assured that the message will remain in the Outbox until the specified date and time. Your message will then be sent as usual.

Note: Remember that your machine must be turned on with an active internet connection and MS Outlook running at the time. This is not a problem for you I hope.

Conclusion

With this, you can easily fool your boss; Schedule an email and make him believe you’re still at the office while you go to the movies with your friends. Easy, right? Well, on a more serious note, this is definitely a cool feature in MS Outlook and really useful at times.

Especially when you need to communicate with your teammates who work different shifts and you don’t want to send a letter during your working hours just because he(s) will miss it from the messy inbox. Instead, if it’s sent while the recipient is at his desk, your message will get immediate attention.
