This is most useful for people who use YouTube on Android TV. Since the TV app doesn’t support multiple accounts, you’ll likely see unrelated search terms and viewing history from your family members. Instead, you can reset your YouTube watch history and search keywords from the YouTube mobile and desktop apps.
Reset watch history in YouTube mobile app
Let’s start with the YouTube mobile app, and then we’ll move on to the YouTube desktop app.
Clear YouTube search history
Both the iOS and Android YouTube apps have the same UI/UX. Meaning, the steps to clear search history remain the same on both platforms.
In the steps below, we will be using the YouTube iOS app. But you can follow the same steps on Android and clear the search history.
Step 1: Open YouTube on iPhone or Android.
Step 2: Tap the profile icon in the upper right corner.
Step 3: Go to Settings.
Step 4: Tap History and privacy.
Step 5: Tap Clear search history and confirm your decision.
This move will delete your YouTube search history from all your devices. It will also reset YouTube recommendations. This means that your YouTube video recommendations won’t be affected by your search history.
Delete YouTube watch history
YouTube also allows you to clear your watch history. To do that, follow the steps below.
Step 1: Open YouTube on mobile and go to your profile.
Step 2: Navigate to Settings > History & Privacy.
Step 3: Tap Clear watch history and reset it on all connected devices.
YouTube for mobile will delete all your search and watch history from your device. Be careful when using these options. It will reset the YouTube algorithm for your account, and until YouTube learns about your viewing habits again, you’ll see some irrelevant video recommendations on the home screen.
Reset Watch History in YouTube Web App
What if you want to clear the watch and search history of yesterday or any specific month on YouTube? You can’t do that using the mobile app. With YouTube web, you have the option to clear your search and watch history from specific dates. This is the way.
Delete YouTube watch history
Step 1: Go to YouTube on the web and sign in with your account credentials.
Step 2: Click on your profile icon at the top and go to Your YouTube Data.
Step 3: From the YouTube controls, select Manage your YouTube watch history.
Step 4: Using the Filter by date menu, select a specific date range, or delete YouTube watch history manually by clicking the x button.
From the same menu, you can also use the Auto-delete option and automatically delete YouTube watch history over time.
Clear YouTube search history
Step 1: Click on your profile icon on the YouTube web and select Your YouTube Data.
Step 2: Find YouTube Search History in the YouTube Control menu and select Manage your YouTube Search History at the bottom.
Step 3: It will take you to the same menu as before. The Activity dashboard contains your search and viewing history.
Click the Clear button and choose a custom date range and remove the data from YouTube.
Pause Search History and Watch History on YouTube
Users also have the option to pause their YouTube search and watch history. Here’s how to do it.
Step 1: Open YouTube on iPhone or Android.
Step 2: Tap the profile icon and go to Settings.
Step 3: Go to History and Privacy.
Step 4: Turn on the Pause Watch History and Pause Search History toggles.
From now on, YouTube will not save your search history nor your watch history on the servers.
Some users also clear their YouTube search and watch history for better recommendations. After watching travel videos for a day or two, YouTube will continue to suggest you more travel videos.
To get rid of those unwanted suggestions, sign in to the YouTube web and delete those watched videos from Watch History and search keywords from search history.
