How to Remove Duplicate Media Files Using iTunes ( and CopyTrans)

If I start by saying that iTunes is one of the best music players of all time, I think I’d be a bit unfair with it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not denying that it’s one of the best but what I feel is that it’s more than just a music player, it’s more than that.

Using iTunes, you can manage terabytes of your music and sync them to your portable music player in a jiffy. If you’re like most of us, you must have redundant music files in your iTunes library. Sure, computers these days have practically endless disk space and having a few duplicate tracks doesn’t make a difference but it does count when the music is on, such as a limited-capacity portable USB drive. In that case, you’ll want to remove duplicate music files, if any, to save bytes of storage.

In this post, we will see how we can use iTunes in Windows to remove duplicate media files.

Remove duplicates with iTunes

iTunes has an inbuilt option to deal with your excess media files. To start the process, make sure you’re in the music section of your Library with no filters. Click File -> Show Duplicates to display all the duplicate files in your library. This method will display media files with the same name although the track length may be different.

Duplicate display

To find exact duplicates, hold down Shift while clicking File and select Show Exact Duplicates to get a list of exact duplicate files.

Show exact duplicates

You can now remove duplicate media files from your library. This will automatically remove them from all your synced devices.

However, in the above method, you have to do it manually to delete each file, and I don’t need to tell you how difficult this can get if you have a large music library. Also, the files you delete will only be deleted from the library, not from your hard disk. If you want to get around both of these limitations then CopyTrans is what I recommend.

Remove Duplicates with CopyTrans iTunes Duplicates

Deleting duplicate songs with CopyTrans is very easy. Just download, extract and run the executable. Make sure you close iTunes before doing that. The tool is portable in nature and does not require installation of any kind. When you run the tool, it automatically scans your iTunes library and displays the results in front of you categorized in different albums.

Replication

Just click on the album you want to clean up and select the duplicate tracks from the left sidebar. When you select tracks, you’ll see a small blue screw icon, tap it to delete your actions.

To move

Finally, click the big blue settings icon at the top (right next to the back button) to confirm your action. All your files will be deleted not only from your iTunes Library but also from your hard disk.

My judgment

Both methods are good in their own way. Of course, there are other ways to get rid of duplicate files. We talked about using NoDupe to do that. You may know about another person. Why not share them in the comments? ????
