How to Reduce WhatsApp Storage on iPhone

If you regularly use WhatsApp to stay in touch with friends, family or clients, this app can take up a significant amount of space on your phone. Reducing WhatsApp space helps you free up space on your iPhone and iCloud account. And who doesn’t love extra space on their iPhone for more photos and songs?

WhatsApp has a handy storage menu to give you an overview of how much media space is taking up on your iPhone. That’s why you don’t have to go through individual chats to manually delete photos and videos. Alternatively, you can change your WhatsApp settings to disable automatic downloads for all incoming media files. So, this is how you can reduce WhatsApp space on your iPhone.

Check WhatsApp Storage on iPhone

Before we explore the step-by-step guide to freeing up WhatsApp storage on iPhone, let’s first check how much space the app takes up.

Step 1: Open Settings on your iPhone.

Step 2: Scroll to General.

Step 3: Select iPhone Storage.

Step 4: You can check detailed memory analysis from the following menu. WhatsApp can be at the top of the charts if you are a multi-app user.

Step 1: Launch WhatsApp on your iPhone.

Step 2: Go to Settings from the bottom right corner.

Step 3: Open the ‘Storage and Data’ menu.

Step 4: Select ‘Manage storage’.

Step 5: You can check the whole WhatsApp media analysis. It’s time to review and delete unnecessary items.

Step 6: Open the ‘Larger than 5 MB’ menu and check all the large WhatsApp files. Tap Select in the top right corner.

Step 7: You can review and select the large files manually or press Select All at the bottom.

Step 8: Tap the delete icon in the bottom right corner. You have two options to choose from.

Delete Items: Option to delete only selected items. If you have forwarded the video or file to another chat, WhatsApp will not delete those copies.

Remove the item and any duplicates: This will delete the original media and all forwarded copies from WhatsApp. You need to be careful when using this option as it will permanently delete the file from your WhatsApp account.

If you want to save a specific photo or video on your iPhone, open it and select the Share button at the bottom. Click ‘Save Video’ and keep the file offline on your phone.

Deleted file forwarded

You should delete files that you have forwarded many times. This option is available in the same ‘Manage Storage’ menu in WhatsApp Settings.

Step 1: Go to Manage Storage in WhatsApp Settings (check the steps above).

Step 2: Open the ‘Forwarded Multiple’ menu.

Step 3: Tap Select and select all files (these are mostly unrelated files that fill up WhatsApp storage on your iPhone).

Step 2: Select your contact or group to take up storage in GB.

Step 3: You can tap the filter button in the bottom left corner and sort the media files by size or date.
