How to Read PDF Ebooks, CHM, and Text Files on PSP

In addition to playing games, you can listen to music, watch videos, and read comic books on your PSP. We’ve covered several articles to help you play games on your PSP, so I thought of exploring the other options we have for PSP entertainment. We will see some interesting articles about music and videos in the coming days, but today I will show you how to read ebooks on PSP, which I love to do in my spare time.

By default, PSP only supports digital comics which you can download from the PSP store, but it’s a game for kids (yes, adults can play games on PSP). Today I will show you how to use a small PSP Homebrew called Bookr to read PDF, CHM and text files on your PSP.

Install and use Bookr

To get started, download and extract Bookr homebrew on your computer. Having done that, mount your PSP memory stick and copy the extracted folder to the MS\PSP\Games folder, then safely unmount your memory card.

Note: You will need a hacked PSP with custom firmware to run homebrew. An unhacked PSP can display apps in the game menu, but will give you a data corruption error when you try to launch them.

Start screen

When homebrew launches, it will ask you to open the file you want to read. However, before starting to read any book, it would be better to familiarize yourself with the controls. It’s not a PC or smartphone where your mouse or touch screen will take care of everything. That’s the limited amount of PSP buttons you have to do here.

After viewing the controls, select file open option to load the PDF you want to read. Unlike games and media files, there is no specific folder in which you save PDF files. You can copy them anywhere you want on the memory card and browse for it in the app.

E-book files

After the file uploads, you can start reading. If it’s not convenient to memorize the controls, you can use the select button to bring up the navigation menu. If you love the landscape mode when reading, you can rotate the screen and use the fit-width option along with the zoom controls for a comfortable feel. The only downside of the tool is that it doesn’t support text breaks. If you plan to exit the app while reading, don’t forget to create a bookmark.

Conclusion

If you read ebooks on your smartphone or tablet, you may find it difficult to adjust to the PSP. But from a battery point of view, you can have a PSP for all your entertainment and relaxing tasks like reading, while your smartphone will serve you for calling and browsing the internet.
