How to Play Spotify on Apple HomePod

Despite fierce competition from apps like Apple Music, Amazon Music, and YouTube Music, Spotify continues to dominate the music streaming market. The service is available on all major platforms, including smart speakers from Amazon, Google, and Apple. If you’ve invested in the Apple ecosystem, you can easily play your favorite Spotify playlists on your HomePod.

The Apple HomePod doesn’t come with Bluetooth connectivity, unlike Amazon Echo or Google Nest speakers. Third-party music streaming services like Spotify need to implement the relevant components in their services to enable Siri support on your HomePod or rely on your phone or tablet’s AirPlay connection to stream playlists.

Does Spotify Support Siri on HomePod

Apple allows third-party developers to add Siri support on the HomePod. If you use Pandora or Tidal, you can ask Siri to play your favorite songs from your library. Apps like Spotify and Amazon Music haven’t added HomePod support yet. You’ll need to use AirPlay to stream songs on your Apple smart speaker. Android and Windows devices lack AirPlay connectivity. That leaves you with an iPhone, iPad, or Mac to stream Spotify on the HomePod. Check it out in action.

Play Spotify on HomePod with iPhone

Interestingly, Spotify supports Siri on iPhone but not on HomePod. Thankfully, Spotify has built-in AirPlay functionality. Follow the steps below to play Spotify on the HomePod. Before you continue, refer to our guide to fix iPhone not working AirPlay and make sure it works perfectly.

Step 1: Download Spotify from the Apple App Store.

Step 2: Launch Spotify and sign in with your account information.

Step 3: Choose any song from your playlist or Spotify’s great recommendation list.

Step 4: From the song information menu, tap the device menu in the bottom left corner.

Step 5: Tap AirPlay or Bluetooth from the ‘Current Device’ menu.

Step 6: Find your HomePod in the ‘Speakers & TV’ menu.

Step 7: Tap your HomePod and stream the same on your Apple smart speaker.

Spotify’s lack of Siri support on the HomePod won’t stop you from playing your favorite songs on it. AirPlay does the same without breaking a sweat. You don’t have to go to Spotify every time to change the audio output. You can also change the same from the lock screen.

Step 1: Press the power button and check your iPhone lock screen.

Step 2: Click on the AirPlay icon on the music player utility.

Step 3: Select your HomePod from the pop-up menu and enjoy Spotify songs on the HomePod.

You don’t need a Spotify Premium subscription to play songs on the HomePod.

Stream Spotify on HomePod via iPad

Apple iPad is also equipped with AirPlay support. If you have an iPad at home or office, you can play Spotify on your HomePod. Go through the steps below.

Step 1: Download and open Spotify on your iPad.

Step 2: Select any song you want to play in Spotify on iPad.

Step 3: Tap the device icon in the lower left corner.

Step 4: Select AirPlay or Bluetooth.

Step 5: Tap your HomePod from the AirPlay menu.

Similar to iPhone, you can also change the sound that comes from the iPad lock screen.

Step 1: Power on your iPad’s lock screen.

Step 2: Select the AirPlay icon on the music player utility.

Step 3: Tap your HomePod and you’re ready to go.

It’s good to see Apple offering an AirPlay option right on the lock screen. You don’t need to open Spotify to change the audio output.

Play Spotify on HomePod with Mac

If you primarily work on a Mac, you don’t need to use your iPhone or iPad to play Spotify on your HomePod. You can do the same using the Spotify website or the native Mac app. Take the Spotify website as an example here.

Step 1: Go to the Spotify website on your Mac and sign in with your account credentials.

Step 2: Select Control Center from the upper right corner.

Step 3: Click the AirPlay icon in the Sound menu.

Step 4: Select your HomePod to change the audio output.

Your Mac will start using the HomePod to play your favorite Spotify tunes. While modern Macs come with outstanding sound quality, nothing beats the HomePod’s bass and overall audio performance.

Spotify needs a boost

We look forward to seeing Spotify add support for Siri on the HomePod. So you can ask Siri to play, pause, or skip songs on the go. What streaming service do you use with the HomePod? Pin down your preferences in the comments below.
