How to Organize Calendar Sets in Fatastical 2 for Mac

The popular calendar app for Mac, Fantastical, recently launched version 2 which brings a bunch of new features to the software. First, Fantastical 2 supports something completely new called a calendar. Now, instead of just switching between different calendar views, you can organize your calendars into important groups and view them one by one.

You will instantly forget how you lived without calendars once you set them up. Luckily, it’s easy to start organizing your calendar into sets. Once you have Fantastical 2 installed on your Mac, go ahead and give it a try.

Note: While Fantastical 2 is also available for iPhone and iPad, the calendar feature has not yet been ported to iOS. The developers have stated that this will come in the future.

About Fantastical 2 Calendars

In addition to the menu bar view you may be familiar with from the first version of Fantastical, Fantastical 2 also brings a full calendar window. This means accessing, viewing, and organizing calendars can be done in either format.

Notice at the bottom of either window you have a drop down menu which by default will say All calendars. Click here and then select Calendar Management… to open Fantastical’s preferences and edit your calendars and sets.

If you’re like me, you didn’t even realize you might need multiple calendars until you discovered this feature that can switch between groups of calendars. For example, I have a calendar for general events and appointments, a “Maybe” calendar for plans that are still in progress, work and class schedules, friends birthdays, and national holidays.

Those can easily fit into broader categories, so I don’t have to constantly cycle between all of them when I want to focus on specific types of events. With Fantastical 2, I organized these calendars into three sets of calendars: Plans & Appointments, Work & School, and Birthdays & Holidays. I also created a master Calendar with every calendar except Facebook holidays because I don’t need to see all of my friends’ birthdays every day. Sorry guys.

Tip: Since calendars replace the standard functionality of switching between calendars, you’ll have to specify a calendar for its own calendar if you just want to see it.

Organize your calendar

To add a new calendar, click More icon at the bottom left in Fantastical’s preferences. Give it a name. Then on the right, select the calendar you want to add to this particular set. Get creative and think about how organizing your calendar can increase your productivity when done right.

Better yet, you can choose to automatically activate different calendars at different locations. For example, if you bring your Mac to work, you can choose to have Fantastical 2 show your calendar when you arrive. Then when it leaves, it can switch back to your personal life. Just checking Auto-trigger at location to enable this feature for the calendar.

Fantastical also cleverly assigns keyboard shortcuts to each set of calendars you create. All calendars To be Control + 1 and each calendar after that is an incremented number. If your calendar is third or lower, the shortcut is Control + 3.

Worth a try

Thanks to the calendars in Fantastical 2, it’s easy to plan your day and week. Try it out to get the most out of your new calendar app. Hopefully we’ll soon see well-deserved Fantastical calendars for iOS.
