I’ve always hated the idea of using cables to transfer data between my devices. Whether it’s photos or music, wireless file transfer solutions have always fascinated me. This prompted me to look for wireless file transfer solutions for Android smartphones, many of which I have shared with you before.
From transferring files wirelessly between Androids, transferring files using the browser and transferring apps between two Android devices – you name it, we have a guide to do it. Adding to the list, today I will show you how to map your Android device as a hard drive on Windows and transfer files wirelessly. I believe it is much easier to use CTRL+C/X And CTRL+DRAW when transferring files rather than using third-party tools or web browsers.
Map Android Storage as Windows Drive
To get started, download and install the WebDAV server app on your droid. This app can be installed on any device and no root access is required for it to work. Once the app is installed, make sure the computer and phone are connected to the same Wi-Fi network and press the red button to start the server. The app will show an IP that you can connect to so you can access the storage on your Android.
On your computer, open Explorer and click Network drive map. Here, select the drive letter. I chose the letter A for Android; the fact that no one uses a floppy drive these days means that the floppy drive will be free on any system. When Windows asks you for the IP, enter the IP displayed in the application using the format \\: and then connect.
If the firewall is not an issue, your SD card will be attached to the computer and you will be able to use it just like any other drive on the computer.
Note: I came up with the idea of mounting an SD card as a drive while checking out a new app on the Play Store called AirDrive. This app does the same thing with a single click, but charges a whopping $14 per year. So here is a troll face for the app developer.
In WebDAV’s advanced settings, you can choose a password for added security. Password configuration on Windows should be done while mapping network drives. Alternatively, you can choose a subfolder that you need to map instead of the entire SD card. This folder might be the one you use the most, such as photos or videos.
Hot Tip: For added security, you can change the default port set by the application. The app gives you the option of using a 3G or 4G network to connect. This way you can access files even if you are not connected to the same Wi-Fi network. However, that will affect the amount of data allowed by your device.
