How to Make a Portable Offline Installer for Your Mac

When Apple introduced Yosemite, it changed the way the operating system was distributed for the Mac. Now, you cannot purchase a copy of the Mac OS installer. That’s a problem if you have a limited broadband connection or a metered broadband connection. You will need to create a portable offline installer in these cases.

Download or purchase Mac OS

The first step is to visit the App Store and search for the current operating system. For now, it’s El Capitan. If it is already installed on your Mac, the App store will warn you that the operating system is already on your system. If it’s not installed or you haven’t purchased it on your current Mac, in El Capitan it will say Get instead of Download. After you download the operating system, do not install it. Go to the OS X Setup menu and select Exit OS X Install. Don’t delete this file. You will need it later.

If you want to create an installer for the operating system you previously purchased, you can still do it from the App Store. Go to the Purchased tab and scroll through your purchased and find the correct operating system. In this example are Mavericks.

The easy way: DiskMaker REMOVE

DiskMaker X is a free program that does the hard work of creating USB installers. They do accept donations, so if that helps you, you can put some money in the tip jar.

After you open the program, it will look for the operating system installers on your Mac. In this example, I will create an El Capitan installer. Next, you’ll need an 8 GB or larger drive. This media could be a USB stick, but I use an SD card. Since most Macs running Yosemite have an SD card slot I think that’s easier.

Disc type

DiskMaker confirms the disk you want to use for the installer. Then it warns you need to erase that disk. Confirm again that you have the correct disk and then click continue. After validating your Mac administrator name and password, a few minutes later you should have a complete installer.

The Hard Way: Terminal Commands

If you are more comfortable with the terminal than using a third-party program, you can create an installer. You will need a disk formatted with OS X Extended (Journaled) and with enough space for the installer – 6 GB. The El Capitan installer will need to be in your Applications folder and then you will enter exactly one long command. In this example, I named the external drive El Capitan Installer. You can replace that name with the name of the installation disc you are using.

Don’t be afraid of the terminal: There are some cool tricks you can do or just to be more productive

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia –volume /Volumes/ElCapinstall –applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app –nointeraction

After you enter your password, media creation will begin.

End

Why do you need this?

If you can download it again, why waste a flash drive or SD card? Ideally, your Mac has a recovery partition that you can boot from to repair problems. Sometimes that partition is not there. The offline installer includes a disk utility so you can solve the problem.

However, the most common reason is if your Mac’s hard drive fails. If you only have one Mac, it won’t be easy to reinstall the operating system. Creating the installer first should solve the problem.

The same is true for Windows: It’s convenient to have a system repair/recovery disc for Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10

Finally, if you want to reinstall your operating system to fix the problem, waiting for the installer will take a long time. When things don’t work, you can wait for the download. If you are using a slow connection, the download may take several hours.

Overall, for the cost of a small USB flash drive or SD card, you can rest assured that your Mac problems can be resolved in no time.
