How to Know If You Are Blocked on Facebook Messenger

Blocking someone on Facebook Messenger is a security measure. Fortunately, the social network does not notify users when someone blocks them on the platform. However, there are a few tricks and guidelines to confirm your latest friendship status on Messenger. Here are the best ways to find out if you are blocked on Facebook Messenger.

You can always use WhatsApp, Telegram or Signal to stay in touch with your friends. But if your contacts only use Facebook, you’ll need to create another account or find other ways to contact them. Before that, you can confirm the blocked status on Facebook Messenger with the trick below.

How to block activity on Messenger

Before we show you how to tell if you’re blocked on Messenger, you need to know how blocking works. When things go awry for someone, that person can block you from communicating with you on Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram. Technically, you can still send messages, but your messages never reach the recipient’s Facebook account.

There are two levels of how Blocking works on Messenger. Check out the screenshot below for reference. For some users, you can only block messages and calls. That person can still see your posts, comments, and reactions on Facebook. If you’re in a group or room with that person, you can see and communicate with each other. That said, you can leave the group or room at any time.

Another option is to be completely blocked on Facebook. It cuts all ties with that person. Facebook hides your profile, comments, reactions, messages and all your personal information from blocked accounts.

When you can’t contact someone via Facebook, it doesn’t necessarily indicate blocked status. Sometimes, Facebook may restrict your account from sending messages or posting comments. When you send too many messages, post comments, or use a third-party tool to manage your Facebook account, the company will red flag it as a bot and restrict your account from further interaction. If someone’s account is affected by that behavior, you’ll see a ‘This person is unavailable’ status in Messenger. Read our dedicated post to learn more about such messages in Messenger.

Blocking someone is a two-way street. You can’t text or call someone who blocked you. That person also cannot interact with you. The person will need to unblock you before sending a message on Messenger.

Send a few messages on the Messenger mobile app

You can try sending a few messages on Facebook Messenger to confirm your blocked status. Here’s what you need to do.

Step 1: Install and open the Messenger app on your phone.

Step 2: Search for your friend’s name at the top and open the chat.

Step 3: Try sending a few messages and check the message status.

Step 4: Tap on a message and Messenger just shows ‘Sent’ status.

You can check for similar messages after a few days. If you are indeed blocked by the person, the app will show ‘Sent’ status. When the person doesn’t block you and reads the message, the app will show ‘Seen’ status.

If the account doesn’t appear in search results, the person may have deactivated the account on Facebook.

Use Messenger Web version

You can use the web version of Messenger to check if a sent message is delivered and viewed. Follow the steps below.

Step 1: Access Facebook Messenger on the web.

Step 2: Log in with your Facebook account information.

Step 3: Search for the person’s name and send a few messages.

Step 4: When you are blocked on Messenger, you will only see an empty check mark with the status ‘Sent’.

If the person doesn’t block you, Messenger will show a ‘Sent’ status, as shown in the screenshot below. You also won’t see the person’s active status.

That person has restricted you

In addition to blocking, Facebook allows users to restrict someone. When that happens, you can still text or call on Facebook, but Messenger will hide your messages and alerts from that person. Read our post on what happens when you restrict someone on Messenger. Also, understand the difference between blocking and restricting on Messenger.

Confirm your relationship status on Facebook

In another unorthodox method, you can use another account or have your friend send a few messages to the recipient. If the message goes through and shows ‘Sent’ or ‘Seen’ status, you’ve been blocked by the person on Facebook Messenger.
