So you decided
root your device
and now you are ready to leave the default ROM of your device and discover a great custom ROM for your phone or tablet.
You have definitely come to the right place!
When it comes to rooting, flashing and installing custom ROMs, no two devices are exactly alike. That said, there are some general tips and suggestions that should apply directly across the board. If you’re ready to try installing a custom ROM, just remember that there are risks involved, so proceed with caution.
Provided your device is rooted, the first thing you want to do is install some kind of custom recovery software.
Install ClockWorkMod Recovery
As you may know, by default Android comes with some form of recovery. However, in general, recovery mode is intended for device manufacturers, not ordinary users.
What a custom recovery does is replace these tools with something a bit more flexible and allows for special changes like loading custom ROMs.
There are a number of different tools to get the job done, but we personally recommend ClockWorkMod Recovery. This particular tool is undoubtedly the most popular, and for good reason. CWM Recovery is not only stable but also works with almost any existing device.
Step 1: The first thing you need to do is go to Google Play and download the free version of ROM Manager.
Step 2: Once you have installed the manager, open it up. You will be greeted by a window telling you that to get started you need to download a custom recovery solution. Pick ClockworkMod Recovery from the list.
Step 3: ROM Manager will ask you to select your device from the list. ONE Super User Reminder will appear and you need to grant permission to install. When the tool says it has been successfully flashed, you are ready to go.
Loading Custom Rom
Now comes the fun part, picking out a custom ROM! There are a lot of great options out there, but unfortunately not all of them support your device.
If you are new to installing custom ROMs, CyanogenMod is a great starting point. On top of that, it supports a wide variety of hardware.
Step 1: After you figure out which ROM you want to install, go ahead and download it.
Step 2: Connect your Android device to the computer. Now, you’ll want to go to the location of the downloaded .ZIP file and copy it to your device’s SD card.
Step 3: Now you are ready to unplug your device from your PC and open Backup ROM Manager. Go ahead and choose Reboot into Recovery. The device will reboot.
Step 4: From within ClockWorkMod, navigate to Backup and restore. If you have never used recovery before, navigation works using the volume buttons to move up/down and the power button to select.
Step 5: After pressing backup, it will ask you to confirm. Wait for it to finish completely.
Step 6: Now you will want to wipe everything by going to Wipe data / Factory reset.
Step 7: Finally, it’s time to flash the new ROM. Simply go to Flash Zip from SDcard. Select and navigate to ROM. It will ask you to confirm your action, select Correct.
Step 8: When CWM is done flashing, select Reboot the system now.
That’s it!
Provided that everything works as it should, you should now be offered a fresh install of the selected ROM.
(See below for CyanogenMod, though admittedly it’s not a brand new install)
Congratulations, you’ve now officially moved on from just using Android and have taken your first step in the modding arena.
