How to Get Started with Google Cloud Print On PC and Mobile Phone

Google Cloud Print is the long-awaited answer to my personal prayers for an effective solution to my printing problems. With more than one computer at home, not to mention smartphones and tablets, printing documents and emails from each of my devices can become an annoying chore. Google Cloud Print is a new solution for people who have multiple devices and need the added convenience of being able to print from all of them. If more people use this web application, printing will be much more accessible: Any personal device can sync with any printer.

Google’s new print app lets you access your printer from any web-connected device through Google Chrome. While it’s currently only supported by Windows XP, Vista, and 7 machines, support for Mac and Linux will be coming soon. Finally, mobile apps for different smartphone platforms will also be available. The advantage of this new way of printing is that no driver and printer settings are required. Just sign in with your Google account and you’re ready to burn!

Begin

Note: You need to have Google Chrome installed on your Windows computer to install Google Cloud Print. Also, make sure you’ve set up Google Cloud Print on the computer that’s currently set up with your printer.

Step 1: In the top right corner of the Chrome web browser, there will be a wrench icon that you need to click on.

Step 6: Not exactly a step, but something worth noting nonetheless. Your Options menu now has a new button labeled Manage Print Settings – This is where you can see your pending jobs, active jobs, etc. Definitely helpful if you’re having trouble printing a document.

Your printer should now show up in the list of printers you select when printing on any of your devices. For Windows computers and smartphones, you can print any .pdf or .doc file from Google Docs or any email from Gmail in your browser. More devices and document types will be added in the future.

You can see the rollout of Google’s new cloud printing service on mobile in the screenshots below from my iPhone. Fear not Android users, it’s all browser-based now, so any smartphone with a mobile browser can play along, even for those of you who use BlackBerry.

Open the mobile version of Gmail with your smartphone and open an email that you want to print. In this case, I selected a recent Groupon offer. Tapping the button with two arrows pointing up brings up a drop-down menu of options, one of which is Print.

After you select Print, another web page will open like the one below and you will be able to select the desired printer from the available list, as long as you have it set up on your Windows computer. Who knew that printing from your mobile device could be so easy?
