Just yesterday I read this article by Walt Mossberg, in which he complained about the obvious degradation in the quality of iOS apps and Apple software in general. If this was two or three years ago, he probably would have received criticism from bloggers apologizing to Apple. This time, however, most seem to agree. I’m not surprised at all considering the kinds of errors I’ve been seeing on my iPhone 6 lately. Latest on that list: iOS app stuck on loading/installing.
Hi Siri, can you fix the problem of not installing this app?
So here’s how Amazon’s iOS app appeared on my iPhone one fine day. It was like that for two days. Touching it does nothing. Restart iPhone. Still nothing.
I decided to try the reinstall route. Opened the App Store, searched Amazon (before you scoff, yes, I went update and no, the Amazon app doesn’t show up in that list) and then start the installation.
To my pain, it got stuck there too.
Yes, this is a big deal because I really need to buy something on Amazon. And who has time to open a laptop, open a new browser tab and type amazon.com. Mobile phones are the future, right?
Let’s fix the problem
This is how I fixed this problem on my iPhone.
Step 1: Enter General -> Storage & iCloud Usage.
Step 2: Click on the first one Storage Management options here. The one below Warehouse.
Step 3: Find the app in question (in my case Amazon) and tap it. It is not difficult to realize it has been stripped of the icon design and color.
Step 4: Delete the app. It will also erase the data on the app on your iPhone. In most cases, logging into the application after reinstalling, the data will be restored. But then there are apps (e.g. text messaging apps) that only back up data locally. So make sure to check this and back up your data first if you haven’t already.
Step 5: Restart your iPhone (or iPad, as the case may be).
Step 6: Go to the App Store and reinstall the app.. and that’s it!
Note: FYI, when I started the install process again it took a while and made me nervous thinking it was still stuck like last time. But it worked out in the end (read 10 minutes).
So give it some time if it doesn’t happen as quickly as it should.
What if this doesn’t work?
If the above steps don’t work for you, you can try signing out of the App Store (Settings -> iTunes & App Store -> Apple ID -> Sign Out), then reboot and log back in by going to App Store -> Featured and scroll to the bottom where it asks you to sign in.
You can also reinstall the app through iTunes on your computer after connecting your iPhone to it.
Hopefully, one of these will work. If nothing works, buy a new iPhone.
Just kidding, take it to the Apple Store.
