Apple’s Photos app has several built-in apps for Mac and iPhone. With basic image editing tools, you can edit photos in portrait mode, change color temperature, white balance, etc.
Many third-party photo editing apps promise more features, but most of them are either paid or come with a subscription. Meanwhile, the Photos app is good enough for basic editing needs on the Mac and makes for photos worth sharing. Here’s how to edit photos with the Photos App on Mac.
Edit fast with Auto Enhance
The Photos app comes with an AutoCorrect tool that automatically adjusts the color and contrast of your photos to make them look more vibrant. If you’re in a hurry, you can use this tool to quickly enhance your images before sharing them.
Step 1: Launch the Photos app and double-click the photo you want to edit.
Step 2: Click the Auto Enhance button in the upper right corner. The button looks like a magic wand.
Step 3: Clicking the AutoCorrect button will apply all the changes. If you are not satisfied with the results, click the AutoCorrect button again to roll back the changes.
Crop, Rotate, Straighten and Flip Photos
The Photos app will easily let you correct the orientation of a photo or crop part of it. Here’s how to do it.
Step 1: Double-click the photo you want to edit in the Photos app.
Step 2: Click the Rotate button in the upper right corner to rotate the photo counterclockwise. Hold Option on the keyboard to rotate clockwise.
Step 3: To straighten, crop, flip the image, first click the Edit button.
Step 4: Select the Crop tool from the top of the screen and click the Flip button in the right hand column to flip the image horizontally. To flip an image vertically, hold Option on your keyboard and click the Flip button.
Step 5: Click and drag the Straighten tool to adjust the angle of the image.
Step 6: To crop the photo, first click the Aspect drop-down menu. You can choose whether you want to crop the image in free form or in a defined aspect ratio. For example, choose the Square aspect ratio that is best for the image you plan to share on Instagram.
Step 7: Once the aspect ratio has been selected, click and drag on the corners.
Step 8: Click the Done button when you are satisfied with the result.
Use Filters to Improve Your Photos
The Photos app comes with built-in filters that let you quickly enhance your images. You can use filters to make colors richer, softer, and even use Mono or Noir filters to give your photos an artistic feel.
Step 1: Launch the Photos app and double-click the image you want to edit.
Step 2: Click the Edit button.
Step 3: Select the Filters tab and you will see a list of filters. Click the filters to apply them.

Step 2: In the right column, put your mouse pointer on the Light tool and click Auto to automatically adjust the light and exposure.
Step 3: To manually set the light for the photo, click the drop-down arrow next to the Lighting option and drag the slider.
Step 4: For even more control, click the Options button. You will get individual tools to adjust brightness, exposure, highlights, shadows, etc.
Use color correction
You can use the Color tool to adjust the colors in your photo. You can make them softer or make them stand out.
Step 1: Open the image you want to adjust in the Photos app on Mac.
Step 2: From the right column, put your mouse pointer on the Color option. Then, click Auto to apply color correction to the photo.
Step 3: To manually adjust the color, click the drop-down arrow in front of the Color option in the right column and drag the slider to the right to make the color lighter, or to the left to soften it.
Step 4: For better control over the color tone, tap the Options button in the Colors section. That will give you three more options – saturation, vibrance, and transmission.
Use the Retouch Tool to Remove Unwanted Objects
To remove unwanted objects from a photo, you can use the Retouch tool. It’s not perfect, but it can help you get rid of small imperfections.
Step 1: Open the image you want to edit in the Photos app.
Step 2: Click the Retouch tool to display the options.
Step 3: Here, drag the slider to adjust your brush size.
Step 4: Click and drag over the part of the image you want to delete. For example, try removing the excess grass in the photo that we are using.

Reduce noise and sharpen images
If you take photos in low-light environments, photos tend to be grainy and subjects may not be clear. To make things a bit clearer, you can use the Noise Reduction and Shape tools to remove noise and sharpen your photo.
Step 1: Open the image you want to edit in the Photos app.
Step 2: Hover over the Noise Reduction tool in the left column and click Automatic to let the application automatically reduce the noise.
Step 3: Click on the tool to show more options. Click and drag on the slider to adjust the level of processing you want.
Remember pushing the slider to the extreme is not always a good idea as it will mess up the image in other ways.
Step 4: Similarly, hover your mouse over the Sharpen tool and click Auto so that the application automatically adjusts the sharpness.
Step 5: You can click on the tool to show more options. You can adjust the Intensity, Edges and Fall off parameters. Play with the sliders and see what gives you the best results.
Powerful enough photo app
