How to Edit Firefox’s Dictionary and Remove Misspelled Words

Firefox comes with a lot of inbuilt features. Spell check is one of them. You can use this feature to check for any possible typos when writing emails, filling out web forms, etc. This feature will highlight the wrong word with a light red underline and you can click or right click on it to find the possible correct word.

However, spellchecking isn’t perfect and you can’t always rely on it. It omits a lot of commonly used words such as technical terms (e.g. screenshots, web pages) and words we use in everyday language.

Therefore, we have come up with this guide to show you how you can edit the Firefox dictionary by adding correct words and removing misspelled words.

Note: If Firefox doesn’t check your spelling by default, you can enable it by going to Tools->Options->Advanced and checking the box next to “Check my spelling as I type”.

How to add a new word to the spell checker

If you type any word that is not in Firefox dictionary then you will get red underline as we mentioned. If you are sure that the word you typed is correct, you can add it to the Firefox dictionary by right-clicking on the word and selecting “Add to Dictionary”

To remove misspelled words from the spell checker, you need to edit the persdict.dat file on your computer. Move on to the next section to see how you can edit this file.

How to add more words to the dictionary

1. Click the “Start” button. Type %AppData in the search box. The result will be a folder named “Roaming”. Click it.

2. Now click on the Mozilla folder inside the roaming folder.

3. In this way you have to go to the path To %AppData% ->Roaming ->Mozilla ->Firefox ->Profiles.

4. In the Profile folder you will find another folder named xxxxxxxxx.default. Here x is any random number or alphabet. Open this folder (see screenshot below).

File

5. In this folder you will find the file persdict.dat. Right click on it and open it in notepad. Now, add each word on a separate line. I have added words like Mbps, screenshot, microsoft, website to the dictionary. Save and close it.

Note: If you added any spellings by right clicking on the word and selecting “Add to dictionary” then you can find those added words in this file. You can remove any misspelled words you added by mistake.

So, in summary, first you need to add the words you think are correct to the dictionary. However, if you add a misspelled word or select a misspelled word from the context menu, you can remove it by editing the persdict.dat file as mentioned above.
