The Task View feature in Windows 10 is a boon for power users. It allows you to create multiple virtual screens and separate work and personal life. But not everyone uses Task View, and some are even annoyed with it. Several ways to enter Task View include keyboard shortcuts that can lead to accidental changes in the view and affect the workflow. Fortunately, there are ways to disable Task View in Windows forever.
If you don’t use Task View or have a different workflow, you might benefit from disabling it. We will discuss how to hide the Task View button in the Taskbar, disable it completely, and not allow other Windows users to enable it in this tutorial.
Let’s get started.
1. Disable keyboard shortcuts for task view
Pressing Windows key + Tab button will also open Task View. One can use AutoHotKey app to customize and define custom shortcuts as well as change the way some predefined shortcuts work easily.
The Task View button shows up on the Taskbar. It’s next to the Search or Cortana button. If you have it turned off, you won’t see it.
Right click on the Taskbar and uncheck the ‘Show Task View Button’ option to hide it in the Taskbar.
3. Disable Trackpad Action View Gestures from Settings
You may have accidentally entered Task View while scrolling or using gestures for those of you using laptops. The reason is that Windows has a shortcut to the Task View built into the Touchpad. Swiping the Trackpad with three fingers to the top activates Task View.
Step 1: Press Windows key + I to open Settings. Search for Touchpad settings and open it.
Step 2: Scroll down a bit and you will see the gesture setting for three finger swipe. Select Nothing from the drop-down menu.
Step 4: Scroll a little more and you’ll see the same settings for the four-finger swipe. Again, repeat the same steps.
4. Disable/Hide Task View from Registry Editor
For some less fortunate Windows users, the option to hide the Task View button in the Taskbar was missing. Other users want to go a step further and disable Task View entirely instead of hiding it. The Registry Editor trick is also useful for administrators who want to restrict other users from accessing Task View or virtual desktops.
However, we recommend that you back up your Registry Key before proceeding. These are system level files and can mess up the way Windows OS works permanently.
Step 1: Press Windows key + S to open Windows Search and search for Registry Editor. Open it up.
Step 2: Navigate to the folder structure below.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
Step 3: In the right pane, double-click the . icon ShowMissionViewButton and set the Value to 0 (zero). Save all settings and restart your computer once.
Step 4: If you just want to hide the Task View button on the Taskbar instead of disabling it completely, navigate to the folder structure below instead in the Registry Editor.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MultiTaskingView\AllUpView
Step 5: In the right window pane, double click to open Enabled and set the Value to 0.

5. Disable the task view shortcut from GPE
We have seen how to easily change the keyboard shortcut to launch Task View using AutoHotKey. However, that only works for individual profiles and not at the admin level. This is where the Group Policy Editor (GPE) comes in to enforce system-level rules for all users.
It’s worth noting that GPE is only available to Windows Pro and Enterprise users, not Home users.
Step 1: Open Windows Search again (Windows key + S) and then search and open the Group Policy Editor.
Step 2: Navigate to the folder structure below in the left pane of the window.
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Edge UI
Step 3: In the right pane, double click on Edge swipe allowed to open it and select the Disabled option. Save all settings and restart your computer once to make the changes.
Change your opinion
Task view also allows users to access the Timeline feature and virtual desktop. Did you know that all this data is also synced with another Windows computer that is using the same ID? That means all your history and virtual desktop can be accessed on another computer.
