As if one Windows 8 Start Screen wasn’t enough, Microsoft has added another Start screen to its latest Office 2013 products. Whenever a person launches any Office 2013 product, by default he is greeted with a template selection screen where he can choose from many available online templates and continue working.
For most Office users, they start with a blank document or open an existing saved document to work on. Using templates, especially when you’re starting your work, isn’t common if you ask me. So the Start screen is completely unnecessary for general everyday use.
If you agree, see how we can turn off the Start screen on Office 2013 products.
Disable the start screen for each Office 2013 program
Step 1: Launch the Office program for which you want to disable the Welcome Start screen. Let’s say you want to disable the Start screen for Word exclusively. Launch Word 2013 on your computer and select any template from the Start screen to open an editor window.
Step 2: Click File button and then click Options button to open Word Options
Step 3: In the general options section you will have to uncheck the option Show the Start screen when the application starts. Finally save the settings for permanent changes.
That’s it, you will now no longer get the Start screen template selector for the specific Office program. If you want to make changes to all Office products, you can change preferences individually from each program, but using a registry fix can help you do it in one go. So let’s see how you can get it done.
Turn off the start screen for all programs
Step 1: Open the Windows Run box and run the command re-edit to open Windows Registry Editor. First, make sure that you back up the registry in an external drive if you are not used to editing the registry. You cannot afford to go wrong here.
Step 2: In the registry editor, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\General and find the registry keyDisableBootToOfficeStart. If you don’t find the key by default, right click anywhere on the space on the right hand side, select New DWORD Value (32-bit) and name it DisableBootToOfficeStart.
Step 3: Double-click the DisableBootToOfficeStart key to edit. Replace the key’s value from 0 to 1 and save the changes. You can now close the registry editor and run any Office 2013 product to see if the changes have been made.
If all goes well, you should no longer see the Start screen on any screen from now on.
Conclusion
Be it tablets or laptops and desktops, I don’t think most people will find the Office 2013 Start screen much useful. And, if you haven’t tried Office 2013 on your computer yet, don’t forget to check out the screenshot tour of Office 2013 before you decide to install it.
