How to Customise WhatsApp Notifications For Every Contact

WhatsApp has become the most popular messaging service in the world, and despite its drawbacks, the service has been constantly updated to stay on par with the competition.

As a messaging service used by over a billion people, we all receive dozens and hundreds of messages a day on WhatsApp.

While some of them are from people we want to talk to, usually it’s some group messages that flood your notification bar.

For example, if you are working and waiting for a reply from a specific contact, you should assign a separate message tone or notification light to that contact.

This way, you’ll only interrupt your workflow when you’re sure it’s the message you want to read and reply to right away.

Not only while working but also in other cases, if you don’t want to be bothered by notifications from all your contacts but only some specific contacts, it’s a good idea to specify a custom tone, color notification light or vibration settings.

How to Customize Alerts, Vibrations and Notification Lights?

You’ll need to visit the contact’s profile page on WhatsApp — view profile. You’ll find a ‘Custom Notifications’ option below the Mute toggle.

The new window will show you the ‘Use custom notifications’ toggle at the top, you need to check this button to be able to customize WhatsApp message and call notifications.

User can customize message notification tone, vibration (none, short, long or default), pop-up notification (control whether you always see pop-ups, when screen is on) or off) and notification light.

Users can also customize WhatsApp call ringtone and vibration duration for a specific contact.

After enabling custom notifications, you will see the words ‘Enabled’ written below the ‘Custom notifications’ option (as shown in the image above).

Note that you will have to customize these settings for each of your contacts.

Create a shortcut for a contact

You can also create a shortcut for a contact you often chat with on the home screen. This is especially useful if you don’t want to open the WhatsApp application to read or write to them; This is the way:

  • Open a chat window if that contact.
  • Tap the ‘three dots’ menu in the right corner of the app.
  • Scroll to the last option — ‘More’ — and tap.
  • Find ‘Add shortcut’ — the last option in the new menu — and tap.

You’ll see a pop-up that a chat shortcut has been added to the home screen — the contact’s name and photo in a neat round bubble.

Clicking this icon will take you directly to the respective contact’s chat window.
