With software solutions like Canva, Adobe Spark and Desygner, one can create eye-catching social media posts on the go. Among them, Canva is leading the popularity chart with thousands of templates designed for specific needs. For example, you can create interesting Instagram posts in Canva to engage your followers using built-in Instagram templates. Here’s how to do it.
Over the years, Canva has made a name for itself in the design community. That’s largely thanks to the number of templates available in the software. Sample experiences are at the heart of the Canva software, and we highly recommend getting started with them to create beautiful Instagram posts.
Choose a template
First, we will select a relevant template to start the design process. Canva has over 100k templates. It can be overwhelming for the new users out there. Thankfully, the company has neatly divided the templates into relevant categories to make it easier for the end users.
Step 1: Open Canva on the desktop.
Step 2: Sign in with your account credentials and browse the Canva homepage.
Step 3: Hover your mouse pointer over the Templates section at the top and you will find Social Media templates.
Step 4: Select Instagram Posts under the Social Media heading.
As you can see from the screenshot below, there are over 38k Instagram templates to choose from in Canva. Thankfully, the company has neatly divided them into different categories.
For this post, we will create a Discount banner to use on Instagram.
Step 5: Select Sell.
Step 6: You will see hundreds of Sales templates to make changes in Canva.
Based on your brand or product, you can choose a relevant Instagram template. For example, Instagram posts related to selling beauty products might choose a template with a pink theme. One can also choose from different fashion merchandising templates.
Hover your mouse pointer over a template and you’ll see which templates are free to use and which require a Canva Pro subscription.
Step 7: Choose your preferred template and you will see all relevant details like original creator, customization options, mobile compatibility, etc.
Step 8: Select Customize this template and Canva will take you to the editing interface.
One can also create an Instagram post from scratch. But that defeats the purpose of using software like Canva. It is time consuming and requires knowledge of colors, contrast, fonts, image selection, etc.
The average user can find it quite difficult to find interesting Instagram posts on Canva. So it’s better to stick with templates.
Instagram Template Editing
Now that you’ve selected a relevant template to edit in Canva, it’s time to edit it in Canva.
Change color
Everything in the template is customizable. For example, if the default color theme doesn’t interest you, change it to another using the color wheel at the top.
Edit pictures
One can also modify the default image in the template. Click on the image background and select Remove. You can upload your custom images from your computer or choose from thousands of built-in images.
While you’re at it, try using different filters and effects to accentuate images in Instagram posts.
Logo Deployment

If you already have one, I highly recommend adding it to your Instagram post. It will create and further enhance your brand value.
Text change
You’ll want to remove the default text from the Instagram template and add your own. First, click on the text and remove it. Then add a new text style from the left sidebar. For text customization, one can change the text color, style, size, etc
Play with animation
This is one of our favorites from the bunch. Canva allows you to implement different animation styles for your Instagram posts. It showcases the full appeal of your Instagram post. Add your favorite animation effects and your post is ready.
Export Instagram posts
Have you finished making changes to your Instagram posts on Canva? It is ready to export now. Click the Download button at the top and select the export option.
If you’ve added an animation, Canva will suggest the post in MP4 format. You can export Instagram posts as GIFs or convert to regular PNG or JPG image formats.
Create beautiful Instagram posts with Canva
You can also use the Canva mobile app to create Instagram posts, but the whole experience is best served on the web. Mobile apps are great for making small tweaks.
