How to Change Font Style in Gmail on Web and Mobile

Gmail on the web comes with a rich text editor to help you customize the font style and appearance to your liking. The options are limited on the Gmail mobile app, but they’re still good enough for composing a long email on the go. Let us show you how to change the font style in Gmail on the web and the Gmail mobile app with no extra work.

Gmail on the web

The compose menu in Gmail on the Web offers several formatting tools to change the style and appearance of email text. These options are on par with a dedicated word processing software and include everything for the user to customize the text.

Step 1: Open Gmail on a web browser.

Step 2: Click the Compose button in the upper left corner.

Step 3: Add the recipient’s email address, email subject and start typing your message.

Step 4: Use the format bar below to change the appearance and style of the text.

Step 5: If the formatting options don’t appear for you, click the ‘A’ button at the bottom.

Here are the formatting options offered for Gmail on the web:

Change the default text style in Gmail on the web

Gmail uses the Sans Serif text style by default and keeps the size normal. Instead, you can go to Gmail settings and change the default text style.

Step 1: From the Gmail home page, tap the Settings icon in the upper right corner.

Step 2: Select and View all settings.

Step 6: Scroll to the bottom and select the Save Changes button.

Back to Default Text Styles in Gmail on the web

If you want to go back to Gmail’s default text style, you can easily do that from Gmail settings. For consistency, we recommend using the default text style.

Step 1: Go to Gmail settings on the web (refer to the steps above).

Step 2: From the General tab, scroll down to the text style.

Step 3: Click the delete format icon as shown in the screenshot below.

Scroll down and click the Save Changes button.

Although not shown first, Gmail for Android provides formatting options to adjust the text style. It can be useful when replying to an email or composing a new email. Follow the steps below to learn it.

Step 1: Open the Gmail app on Android.

Step 2: Click the Compose button in the bottom right corner.

Step 3: Compose your email and start typing your message.

Step 4: Select the text and click Format from the context menu when you want to highlight something.

Step 5: You can add bold, italic, underline effects, change font style and color.

Tap the cross in the bottom right corner to hide the format bar. There is no way to change the default text style in the Gmail for Android app.

Format text in the Gmail app for iPhone

Gmail’s text formatting options are limited in the official iPhone app compared to the Android app. You can only play with bold, italic, and underline effects. This is the way.

Step 1: Open Gmail app on iPhone.

Step 2: Compose email and enter message content.

Step 3: Tap and hold on the text that you want to format.

Step 4: Click the formatting option and choose bold, italic, or underline.

We’re not sure why Google doesn’t offer rich text formatting options (like Android’s) on iOS.
